For some elements, several disciplines are applicable. To make sure the person responsible for the discipline is the one being able to manage those parameters of that element, you should be able to release those parameters to a user that links your model. Let me give you a few examples: 1: Appearance assets The structural engineer is (obviously) responsible for the structural columns, framing, etc. so he includes those elements in his model. As an architect, I link his model in mine where I add the architectural elements. Now I need to make some visualizations with several color options. One includes the structural elements to be white, another needs them to be black. But the structural engineer has a fantastically beautiful standard color in his template: rusty red... The structural engineer loves beautiful buildings, but he doesn't give a s**t about the color in his model. Plus, he has no time (budget) to change colors every time I want to. Because, you know, I like to change my mind a lot. I would like to be able to changes the appearance asset in his materials and even swap this asset for one instance of a structural element. And I don't want to do it again every time I receive an updated model from the structural engineer, so all my changes need to be included in his central model. 2: Profile/size and physical assets In my design we need some supporting structures around a window opening. Without them, the building wouldn't collapse, so it's not part of the main structure and therefore not included in the structural engineers model. However, I'm an architect, so I have a feeling about the size of the structural framing, but I'm not especially good at calculating the exact profile needed. That's where the structural engineers comes in. Like before, I like to change my mind a lot, so I'm moving the window back and forth and the structural framing moves along with it. Since I changed the window size, the load on the structural framing might have changed. I would like that the structural engineer receives a warning about my changes on the structural framing when he reloads my model. He could check the profile and the physical material assets and change them if needed. Suggested solution: Somehow, if you link a model that has so called 'released parameters', you should be able to copy/monitor only those released parameters, so you don't get double elements. Any changes to them would be saved in the host model. From that moment on, the changed values will override the values present in the link. Now, when you send this host model (with override values) back to the owner of the linked model, he could reload your model as a link. Revit will recognize the overridden values and their elements ID's, and presents them in a 'coordination review' overview. On acceptance, the values are transferred to the original model and everyone is happy 🙂
