For every Revit Link, in every View Template (our working views are excluded), our standard is to check Halftone and Underlay, and turn off all Annotation Categories (Grids, Levels, etc.) in Visibility/Graphics Overrides. I would like to be able to set these changes as a "default" in the View Templates for new links (in the plan template, we also set the Detail Level to Medium). That way, new links will take those various settings in the different View Templates, but I could always override settings for individual links afterwards, if needed.
One popular workaround is to create a "dummy link" in the project template, set the overrides on that, then just Reload From... to the real file. This is fine for one link, or maybe a couple more, but how many is enough? What if you have 1 dummy link but need 2? or have 3 but need 4? Since we need to train our users for that condition anyway, I've taken the stance in our office that it's better to just not use dummy links to aid in training/simplicity/consistency (though I'm re-evaluating that decision).
Another similar idea which would address the same problem (more difficult to implement?, but more flexibility/uses):
