Currently, revit allows the user creating a family with an electrical component to label its load classification as anything they can think of. This creates a real problem for the electrical designers/engineers. The NEC only has a handful of load classifications : "receptacles", "lighting", "heating", "kitchen", "motors", "largest motor", "elevator", and "other"; each also has a set diversity factor as designated by the NEC. When you allow users to label their own electrical load whatever they want, we end up with multiple categories that are really the same thing. For example, I've seen it where there was the option of classifying a fan powered terminal unit with electrical heat as "HEAT", "ELECTRIC HEAT", "ELECTRIC STRIP HEATING", "ELECTRICAL HEAT", etc... and all those different load types, if left unchecked and not modified, will cause confusion and create problems with our load analysis. Perhaps some kind of an option to audit families when importing them and set them to the appropriate category would work? With more and more manufacturers creating revit content to distribute to MEP engineers and architects, we need to reel this in!
