View template Honor Link Settings (Sub tempaltes)

View template Honor Link Settings (Sub tempaltes)

Long standing issues in Revit that Templates, especially Templates transferred from another file, do not honor Link settings, partly because it is not exposed in the API

GallowayUS_com_RonAllen2_0-1747235813200.png

We are requesting a module in Revit API and in Revit itself that would honor V/G Overrides RVT Links settings, the next level of settings for all model/annotation/analytical/imported/filters on the next screen,
AND

individual overrides for the /Revit Links\ tab, Halftone, Underlay
AND
CUSTOM display overrides per link for
model/annotation/analytical/imported/filters

With the FULL API exposed a module could be written to apply targeted [LINKED} or {SUB] template views to other filters as well as linked models.

If tracking by GUID, Placeholder models in a TEMPALTE file would allow Reload from for major categories, or application of  [LINK *AE-*] type view template sub categories could selectively apply those templates to linked files matching those patterns. E.g. "AE-3D-Building1.rvt" Would automatically get the pattern matching template applied, or Manual application of a template would be 'sticky' to  linked model categories. I.e. applying Template AE-FP For a view would then have [AE-FP] assigned to each LINK in the template.

This would be the same as the [SUB] or [Partial] Template request - where the Template settings in the image shown, would apply the Template settings for [AE-FP-lnk] or [AE-FP] or whatever to the associated link as it would apply it to a view. I.e. it treats the link as a sub-view in the view.  We typically have -lnk versions of templates or partial templates that would override i.e. the annotation and analytical settings for content from a model file so they would not show by default.

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones  - could we Ask & merge all these to here?

Applying a [View Template] to a link would effective be applying all those ☑ checked sub categories and applying them to the view prior to merging/underlaying it with the host file/view.

I agree we need better and more efficient control over linked models. But a model cannot "honor" a linked models V/G overrides because those are view dependent, and views are not brought with a linked model, just the model itself.

I think the idea of applying a separate view template to a linked model in a given view would likely be a good feature to add, and it would address most issues with managing linked model visibility and graphics.

Also, all of those links you've posted are wildly different ideas, so they wouldn't be combined. Posts are only combined if they are identical or pretty darn close to identical ideas.

Hi, @GallowayUS_com_RonAllen2 ,

I appreciate you taking the time to pull all of these ideas together! I hesitate to do so because some are asking for very different functionality, even though they all have to do with how links are viewed. Does that make sense?

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones  - can you ask the posters if they want to consolidate?  The end functionality will support what they requested as well.

    • Are they not brought in when you link a view?

    • If this were implemented - I can see it accommodating the functionality in most, if not all, of those requests. Or did I miss something there in those posts?

Hm, and here I'm still learning. We just use our links as model elements and manage the views within the main model. My mistake.

But regarding consolidation, that's not how this forum works. For one, users may not want all of those ideas, or may not think they're necessary so wouldn't vote for them because they don't want to water down the more pressing ideas.

Beyond that, Autodesk updates an idea's status. They may accept or implement some of those ideas but not all of them. There isn't a good way to convey that if they are lumped together in one post.

@mhiserZFHXS

Understood. That’s exactly why I asked in every post that I believe would be covered by this addition to the software —I've been active in these forums for nearly a decade and recognize the processes and underlying patterns : ) The only way we get traction is to work together to bring shortfalls and potential process use to Autodesk in the hopes they may be able to address the issues and processes.

How about instead of combining ideas.... maybe implement solutions?

And when we link a file in our project, we usually have no control over the source and those view settings.

There should just be a setting to apply any template to the linked model.
