Hello! I'd like to propose an update to the parameters User Interface - in the Modify Panel, and all other places. Now that there are UI revisions going on using Qt, this might be a good time. 1) The font size in 3ds Max should be independent of the font size of the operating system (Windows)! There should be a preference to set the UI font and icon size in general, in a meaningful range. 2) Increase the default font size by 1px at least! The number of 4K monitors is increasing, but still the font size is still 11px - too tiny. Many people have already tried to increase it, with font hacks etc. Can we have 12px per default? That's the font size of the Ribbon text already anyway. 3) The numeric input fields are somewhat short. With bigger (or smaller) floating point numbers this can be a problem sometimes. 4) The numeric fields could scale/lengthen with the size of the Modfiy Panel. Now, when the panel is resized, the layout remains static (due to it's oldschool-pixel-coordinates-approach). 5) Spinners! The old spinners are tiny - 11x7px for one of the arrows. Just Too small to be comfortable. Also, why do the spinners have to be up/down? I'm aware that this is a standard in many UIs (also in Qt), but horizontal spinners could be made bigger. Actually, the whole input field could be the spinner! (In that case, the spinner arrows sould better be to the left and right of the input field.) I don't need range sliders, like e.g. Softimage. An endless spinner does the same thing, uses less space, and it doesn't have to worry about it's range. It's a nice feature of Max that the cursor wraps around the screen borders when 'spinning', btw. This is how Blender does it (one of the few good things about it's UI... ;p) To scrub the parameter: LMB-drag left/right anywhere on the parameter (instead of up/down on those tiny old spinners). To place the cursor into the input field to edit: LMB-release In Max you can directly select text in the input field. This should still be possible. The MMB, or SHIFT-LMB could be used for that. Here's a mockup of the Sphere primitive's property panel with those updates: 6) Parameters should be selectable (white color)! ... so that keys can be set for multiple params at once. Supported by C4D, Softimage... 7) Better animation highlighting of parameters! This is how it looks now: This is not a particularly good UI design, is it. Also, there are animatable parameters in Max (like checkboxes) that do not indicate their animation at all. Cinema 4D, Softimage, Modo have those animation icons (rings, boxes, whatever) next to every animatable parameter. A key can always be toggled on/off by clicking into this icon, and the RMB context menu is invoked on it. For inspiration, check out Softimage's parameter interface: http://docs.autodesk.com/SI/2015/ENU//index.html#!/url=./files/keys_KeyingParametersinPropertyEditors.htm Basically I like interfaces that are clear, reduced, undistracting, consistent, with as less as visual clutter as possible. Text is often better than icons, too. Less is more. Adding such an animation icon adds some 'clutter', BUT if done well, it could work! So, here's a go at it: The animation icons could have a color code and/or letters or icons to indicate the type of key or link/driver. e... expression, w... wire, etc. You get the point. Full red: here's a key. Red ring: there's an f-curve, but no key at this frame. Etc. etc. Hope this will serve as some inspiration. There's much room for improvement here in Max. Thanks for reading!
