The problem:   I've been trying to keep my screen as clean as possible and I think the marker menu is too long now. Even on a large screen, the problem often arises that the lower part of the menu is outside the visible area...     The proposed solution:   My idea would be to add columns and the option of headings.   With 3 columns side by side you could have a clearer and navigation would be just as good as with just one in the middle. You can customize it by using in 1, 2 or 3 columns. The old allocation, as currently with only one column in the middle, would still be feasible. A total of 7 individual arrangement variants would be conceivable. I am a contractor for automotive OEM, and when we get an Alias file the Hardware shader is sometimes the only way to separate the objects/part breakout in the file or they are grouped with no shader. They are usually all on one layer. The problem I have is after the Alias file is released and auto translated to our engineering Cad package everything is same color, No shaders, all one layer and all grouping is lost with thousands of surfaces.  My workaround is to open the original Alias released file, and manually pick by shader and then assign to layer, The same for grouped objects. Pick by group and then assign to new layer. Each shader/group has its own layer. After all shaders/groups have been assigned to separate layers, I save a copy of original Alias file with separate layers locally on my pc, then from that Layered Alias file I export active as to my Engineering Cad format. When I open the exported Cad file, I can work with the separate layers, assign the correct color or material or part break out, I work my way through the layers till all are redefined in the Engineering cad system. Then after all objects have had a color or material or part breakout has been done I save the new Engineering Cad file with the everything back on layer 1 to pass file checker. It is very time consuming and with large Alias files (large areas of vehicle or speaker grills can have 15000 individual surfaces ), Some files the only way to separate the objects in the Engineering Cad system it create new SEW features that can pick surfaces with tangent edges just to separate the surface for part break up. Our auto translator only has a layer option, All the work done in Alias to group or assign shaders is removed and lost. Hello,    Building drafts I often encounter issues while selecting multiple curves (or cos). Alias decides, for some reasons (linked to surfaces UV orientation I believe) to switch the orientation of one of the surfaces resulting in me either killing the history or having to generate my drafts in more than 1 operation. This becomes an issue when I want to change some parameters of the function having to guery edit each element instead of a single group...   I was thinking, in Catia, we have to opportunity to store a variable in the scene and call it in the functions. For instance, if i want my draft angle to be set to 3deg, I generate a common variable called "draft angle" with the value of 3. Once in the draft function, instead of typing "3" for the draft angle value, I call my function "draft angle". Along the way if I need to modify this value, instead of query editing the draft function(s) I just modify my variable.   Do you think something similar can be implemented to Alias ?  I believe it will add a bit more interest to the history building.   Show More

Background:           I extensively work in between Maya and Alias, I not only work on provided sketches but also ideate and iterate in either softwares . There seems to be a lack of feedback in Alias while quick model making mostly with previewing and working in between multiple parts.  Scenario:            1:Possibly working on multiple parts(say exterior and interior in the same project)that are layered differently. And i want to preview how my interior head rest design language corresponds to the exterior without having to see the line weight of exterior (like in toggle model option ) but still be able to work on interior.            2: have a model(maybe imported fbx) without its surface patch layout in my grid in the same window but not overlapping or sharing the same center point (somewhere in vicinity) and the user being able to correspondingly work on surfacing from said reference. Suggestion:           Maybe have a <PREVIEW> mode in <Set State>option of layers just like in Maya. such that user can work on a different layer without having to see the patch layout of a toggled layer. Possibly lock the layer too such that the user doesnot create new surfaces or have ghost commands working on that particular layer.            I think this will be very helpfull for people who Iterate on Alias and also for ones who are working on imported meshes.   Idea in picture: Attached ps image   Hope you like this suggestion and possibly consider this putting into effect.   Regards, Tushar Show More

Include an option where window transparency doesn't fade out the contents of inactive windows. Though visibility is always going to be maximized by disabling transparent windows, this change would still greatly improve visibility for those who choose to use the feature, as demonstrated in this example:     I feel that the feature is underutilised but has great potential if we could refine it a little bit. Improving visibility of inactive window elements would be a relatively simple change, and the feature would get more use. Bellow is an alternate option, less aggressive in fading window contents:   Including additional options such as 'permanent transparency' along with 'use alternate color for active window' would give user better control over their ui aesthetics, maximizing visibility of their project, allowing them to more easily see relevant information contained within transparent windows.    Show More

Hi,,   i'm not sure if this feature is coming in a future version,, but its quite common in other softwares, it would be handy to have in object lister,,   Scenario: In object lister, when i select a surface or node, and i'ld like to drag it into another node/layer, Issue: if the other node/layer is off the visible area in object lister, i cannot select the node and MMB drag it to the node/layer i want ,, Solution: the ojbect lister should auto scroll if i hit the upper or lower window limit when i've mmb dragged a node,, i think the layers bar is able to do this nicely when it hits the left or right ends   Issue: if possible i'ld like to be able to cut and paste in object lister, i see copy and paste is possible but not cut? or is it just me...   Issue: ild like to be able to select a surface in the viewing window and then see where it is in the object lister tree heirarchy,, like a 'show selected' command,, Vred has this feature, i find it useful Show More

Can we not have a create switch option in object lister and create layers in it so as to make it switchable same as in Vred. I know similar thing can be done in variant lister but the object lister option will be more useful.   The object lister can be made more useful by adding two options . 1. Create new Switch- so that a switch will be created and inside it a folder or layer can be made . And two layers or folders can be switched by just clicking on object lister. Now here I know it can be done by doing both the layers invisible and clinking on it so the active layer will be visible, but it is not possible in case of folders, and also the possible mistakes of doing it unintentional still remains. where as the separate option will help a lot. 2. Giving tick marks in front of layers so as to on / off layers with just one click and not by right click , and hide. Show More

Here's something that I'm shocked that not one single program or game that I have used for my 37 years of existence and use of computers and programs since the i385 have implemented.  Print out keyboard shortcuts.  Don't have to be a fancy diagram with all the key colored in and everything. Just a print listing of everything with a shortcut key would be helpful on it's out broken down into categories and color coding would hep. This would help both for those who are learning Alias and any other Autodesk  software  and also if you either haven't used it for awhile, forgot a shortcut, or have moved your shortcuts to help improver you workflow but forgot what they are. You can just print them and maybe even have a way that when you open shortkey modification you  can have it show all shortcuts that are asigned, instead of having to click every single one of them to find the short key you need to remind yourself about. After trying out a number of version of Autodesk 3d programs (including Alias, Maya, and Meshmixer) and other 3d programs (Blender, and a few others), I have noticed a big trend in something they ALL lack. And that is an interface that takes advantage of touchscreen and stylus that many laptops and even some computer screens have today. Instead, I need install something like Tablet pro to be able to access shortcuts that would otherwise use keyboard shortcuts or multiply keys to use instead of just folding to (or for surface pro removing the screen) screen-only mode. This is highly takes away the effectiveness of having a touchscreen\stylus and up to 10 touchpoints on surface pro, Asus touchscreen laptops, and many other Windows 10 systems.    Even simple things like pinching for zooming in and out, 2 finger rotating and panning, auto-hiding floating menus similar to sketchbook,  3 finger swipe right and left  for undo and redo,  and 5 finger touch to bring up large tool opitions that are easy to click are just a small example of what can be done.    I do have a few designs and layouts in mind. Everyone makes typing mistakes, nevertheless the input search string could pick up the desired tool despite (intentional) typos as demonstrated in Blender here.  This means, I can find SubD tools when typing "sd", "sudb" or "sbud." It can intentionally be used to find: Transform CV by typing "tcv" or the surface fillet tool with "sfllt".   I propose to also add a checkbox which filters results based on the tool name (including custom tool names in the shelves) or tool path name, (e.g. tool location in the palette/ shelves, such as "Palette>surfaces") because it currently sorts the results alphabetically, which includes the tool path location.     Finally, the results could be filtered based on the first letter per 'word', so for surface fillet, by typing "s f" the results are sorted by the first letter "s", then any tools with a two or more words in the name would show up starting with the "f", if exhausted, the results without the "f" as start in a new word would be given, etc.   The dynamic search updates in 2021.2 to the tool locator are awsome and a great start on improving the functionality! The buttons with symbols: (` + ~) and (' + ") on my keyboard (QWERTY, US International) cannot be used as inputs for hotkeys, please allow for all buttons as input on standard keyboard layouts. The current Hotkey Editor could be improved in several ways: Rather than typing out the hotkey combination (e.g. ctrl+shift+s), it would be nice if the input box could read the keys that are being pressed and automatically fills in the combination. In addition, it would be nice to be able to search for a specific function title, (e.g. "Hotkeys/ Menu editor") so you could then set the hotkeys for the queried function. This way users won't have to open several submenus to find the function they would like to remap. In case of conflicting hotkeys, the dialog box below should additionally prompt to edit the keymap for the conflicting function, which in this case is "Invert Layer". Sub-D To be able to mimic Sub-D shortcuts from polygonal modeling packages the editor could allow for additional functionality like what's present in Max' Hotkey Editor. With regards to complete UI customisation, the current Clutch Keys Editor, offers little customisation and thus does not (fully) allow customisation to smoothly transition between different software packages. A possible way to implement user preferences is shown with this example from Blender where button press, release, click, mouse drag, double press are all configurable: This way, shift/ alt + drag to extrude edges is also configurable.
