Using LMTools from AutoCAD install to manage VMWare licenses

Hi. The new VMWare Infrastructure 3 product (ESX3, Virtual Center 2, etc.) uses LMTools to manage licenses. We already have LMTools installed on a (physical) server to manage our AutoCAD licenses. Can we also use it to manage our VMWare licenses? How? Anyone done this?

Thanks,
Rodd

Yeah, you can use LMTOOLS to run two vendors. You can even combine the licenses if they are compatible. The information is in the documentation folder.

Or you can find an online manual here:

I've not tried to also use these products but have used up to 4 different
vendors on the same server.
Start lmtools.exe and make sure that you use services. On the tab "Config
Services add a new service for the VMWare licenses (I asume you have one
license file for all these).

I find that the NLM works much better if you use one service and combine all of your license files.

As long as they are compatible that is an option. I've not seen any issues
running each vendor as a separate service. One advantage is that each server
has its own debug log. Having one common debug log makes it harder to debug
a single vendor daemon's problem.

There is also a third option, to use multiple license servers or lmgrd files
but I have yet not seen the need for it. If one server goes down, the other
servers continue to serve licenses for their vendors.

Jimmy,

Hi. You said: On the tab "Config Services" add a new service for the VMWare licenses.

Well, I don't have an Add Service button. Only Save Service and Remove Service. Any suggestions?

Also, I know that each vendor has a Daemon. How can I install just that part of the license server for a product? For example, if I already had FLEXlm server installed from a VMWare install, how would I install the daemon (windows service?) for AutoCAD? Look at section 3.4 of this document.

To add a new service to the Config Services tab, simply start typing a new service name in the Service Name pulldown box. Then point the corresponding files to the correct locations. Then save the service. You will now see the multiple services in the pull down. Note: I don't recommend running more than one service because it can become confusing on starting and stopping individual services and checking the individual status of each. I recommend combining your license files and running just one service.

As for installing multiple Daemons, this is not necessary. The NLM doesn't actually need to be installed at all. You can copy the necessary .exe files into the correct folder and run them from there. Also, the versions of the NLM are all backwards compatible. So install the latest version you have (for Autodesk 2007 it is 10.8) and you should be fine on all the rest. As long as it can find adskflex.exe and whatever other daemon .exe that your license file needs to be there, it should work.

It's harder to understand the manual than it is to do the actual process. Just keep posting here if you have to.
