Help needed - Installing on drive other than C

So I attempt to install Inventor on my D drive as my C drive is pretty much full.

I specify where on the D drive to install and I get the error that there's "not enough space on the C drive, 15G needed"

Well no duh! That's why I told you to install on the D drive.

So, what's the trick? How do I stop the install process from thinking I want it on the C drive even after specifying to put everything on the D drive? It shouldn't be this difficult. What am I missing?

Not an option for the most part. Sorry.

Unfortunately it's not possible.

Inventor / Revit you can do some of the libraries / catalogs on a the 2nd drive. But the program has to be on the C:

Move the C:\Autodesk and C:\Download files to the new

Clean out what you can. Move older versions data to the 2nd drive.

I have some tricks that can probably get you working.  There's a lot of ways to clear some space.  Moving the %TEMP% folder would go a long way to solving this.  Also moving the Windows memory swap file, disabling hibernation, etc.

I have a laundry list of things you can check here:

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone!

This seems like it could be an issue. There should be an option to do such, especially if it offers such.

Honestly, for my situation, I think I'm just going to get a new system. My current system is now 7 yrs old and has served its purpose. Time to retire it from CAD and let it retire to VR game playing...;)

It's time.

When installing software like Inventor, some installers may still require temporary files or components to be placed on the C drive, even if you specify an installation directory on another drive. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

Steps to Install Inventor on D Drive

  1. Check for Temporary Files:

    • Some installers unpack files temporarily to the C drive. Clear out any unnecessary files in your %TEMP% directory:
      • Press Win + R, type temp, and delete unnecessary files.
      • Also check C:\Windows\Temp for any large files you can remove.
  2. Change Environment Variables:

    • Change the location for temporary files to the D drive:
      • Right-click on This PC > Properties > Advanced system settings > Environment Variables.
      • Under User variables, find TEMP and TMP, and change their paths to a folder on your D drive (e.g., D:\Temp).
  3. Free Up Space on C Drive:

    • If possible, free up some space on the C drive:
      • Run Disk Cleanup: Search for "Disk Cleanup" in the Start menu, select the C drive, and remove temporary files, system files, etc.
      • Uninstall unnecessary programs or move large files to the D drive.
  4. Run as Administrator:

    • Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator. Sometimes this can help with permissions or issues related to installation paths.
  5. Check Installer Options:

    • Look for options during installation that specify where to install components or if there are any advanced options that allow you to adjust installation paths further.
  6. Use a Different Installer:

    • If you have access to a different version of the installer (like a standalone installer or a different installation method), try that to see if it behaves differently.
  7. Contact Support:

    • If the above steps don't resolve the issue, consider reaching out to Autodesk support for assistance. They may have specific recommendations for installation scenarios like yours.

By following these steps, you should be able to bypass the space requirements on the C drive and successfully install Inventor on your D drive.
