Many times, during the design process we need to create several versions of surface data, pipe networks, and alignments. Did you know you can add folders in prospector to help you stay organized? As a new feature released in Civil 3D 2017 you can add folders within the prospector tab to stay organized.
Let’s review how this is done with surfaces on the Prospector tab of the Toolspace palette. In Figure 1 below I have surfaces for 3 separate landfills, and existing grade (EG) a final grade (FG) and working files.
Figure 1: Surfaces in Prospector
Follow these steps to create folders then place your surfaces within those folders.
- Right-click on Surfaces.
- Select Create Folder
Figure 2: Create Folders
The Create folder window will appear. This is where you will create your folders to stay organized during the Design Process
- Create 4 folders: 3 for each Landfill and one for the working surfaces.
Figure 3: Create Folder Window
Follow the next steps to finalize your organization of your surface data.
- Create the four Folders as shown
- Drag Landfill 1 surfaces into the Landfill 1 folder.
- Drag Landfill 2 surfaces into the Landfill 3 folder.
- Drag Landfill 2 surfaces into the Landfill 3 folder.
- Lastly, drag the working surface or surfaces into the Working folder.

Your final folder structure should look like something as shown in Figure 5. Keep in mind you can do this with Pipe Networks and Alignments in Civil 3D.
