Civil 3D Quick Tip: Swap a Surface in a Volume Surface

Civil 3D does not currently allow you to change the base or comparison surface that makes up a volume surface, AKA a cut-and-fill surface.  This can be frustrating if you have received new surface data that requires a change in the volume surface. A workaround is to create two blank surfaces that act as a placeholder whenever you create a volume surface.

Use the paste surface option to paste your existing or proposed data into the respective placeholder surface.  The volume surface will update with the new data.

Remembering this quick workflow whenever you need to do a cut and might save you time if you frequently work with volume surfaces.
