Revit Hints and Hacks: Live Hidden Lines

autodesk-revit-badge-2048px.jpg

I remember my first drafting class. I think we all started with mechanical drafting, at least those of us with drafting board experience. (Showing my age here.) We had to show hidden lines for what was on the part that could not be seen in the different views. Well, Revit has a form of showing hidden lines that can make some views clearer.

When I look at some drawings, I remember how I started drawing hidden lines to represent what was behind the prominently facing surface. Of course, I started on board drafting, and in drafting class, I began on Mechanical drawings as most of us did back then. I did many drawings of objects with hidden lines that had to be shown. I still see how this work can be used today in Revit.

I will start with placing an elevation along the side of a building part of the building below grade. First, I will remove the topography hatch pattern from the view. I did an Override Elements in View and unchecked the Cut Patterns Visibilities.

Next, I will set the view to Wireframe to find what I want to bring into hidden lines.

Next, I turned off the wall pattern and other things I did not need to see in this view.

Set the view to Hidden Line mode. I can now get started hiding what I need to. On the View tab, locate the Show Hidden Lines tool. Stop at the Options bar to check Multiple Selection.

You will notice at the bottom of the screen that you are being prompted to Select an Element to show hidden lines behind. This will become transparent so you can see the things it is hiding.

I selected the Topography.

Now, at the bottom of the screen, you will be prompted to Select the Element(s) that will show the hidden line.

Select the things you want to hide now. You will see them turn to hidden lines.

I will repeat the exercise with the wall as to what is to hide things.

If you don’t want something hidden, use the Remove Hidden Lines tool next to the Show Hidden Lines tool. This exact process applies to that tool as well.

If the currently selected hidden elements are edited, they will maintain their hidden properties in this view. If new elements are added to this view, check if they need to be shown as hidden lines.
