View Template improvements

View Template improvements

In using View Templates (V/T) more and more, there are a few things I think that could be improved.

Often users are confused with what is in and what isn't in the V/T's. For a seasoned user, it's easy to tell, but sometimes takes a couple extra steps to figure that out.

For example: I have a V/T applied to my view, but in order to see what is included, I need to open up that dialog. I then see that the model categories (or something similar) aren't included in the V/T, so I then have to close out and go back to the V/G dialog and find my setting.

On the flip side, if someone was to go to the V/G dialog first, they see the settings, but can't edit them, so then have to go to the V/T dialog.

I'd like to see some kind of melding of the V/G and the V/T dialogs. Make the settings more fluid and simpler/quicker to access and adjust. For one, there is no way to assign a keyboard shortcut to the view specific V/T settings, that would help.

But making it so that there is one unified dialog that you can access all of the settings one way or another, would be a better solution. Just having a good way of knowing what is being driven by the V/T and what is just a view specific setting would solve a lot of issues.

At a minimum it would be great if a button could be added to the visibility graphics dialog that would take you directly to the assigned view template. Maybe similar to the way you are taken to Object Styles.

They need to remove the nested Revit Link settings from view templates and expose each Revit link to the parent View Template dialog with the checkboxes.  Right now if you have a floor plan view template and you want to show "linked views" from another trade you need to immediately split up your view templates into one per floor to change the linked view settings.

I may not be explaining it the best way but having one checkbox to control the entirely of RVT Links panel is terrible.

The ideas to build up multiple view templates is grand and submitted elsewhere (HERE).  I definitely need the ability to separate Revit Links, and its sub categories, from the remainder of view settings.  As an MEP user I would think about it this way: Lets say I have a heavily "stepped" building.  Architecture has setup their backgrounds with plan regions and captured all the floor elevation changes.  I configure my floor plans to look the way that I want, model categories, filters etc, this is something I could easily apply to every level of my building, except its best to now use LINKED VIEWs to have the architectural background plot correctly.  This forces me to have separate view templates for each floor which is a huge pain to keep up with.

@casquatch For the keyboard shortcut, there's an idea here (separated, per Autodesk's preference):

@richardsachs4475 I also liked your idea of a button in the dialog so much that I created the post here:

Thank for the support @lionel.kai

I think there could be an entirely new setup for both the VG and VT dialogs that melds them together. It doesn't really matter how this happens, as long as it works and is fluid. Since the VTs we introduced after the VG overrides and the ability to "lock" things to the VTs, it makes sense that Autodesk kind of cobbled it together. A revamp of the entire thing would be best, but as we all know, we are just along for the ride.

Hopefully this one gets picked up, or something similar.

You're welcome! That sheds some light on why there's a VG shortcut, but not VT... (we didn't start using Revit until just before they introduced View Template locking).

Thanks for taking the time to submit your idea. Unfortunately, this idea did not get the support of the community over the last 6 months and as such we will not be pursuing it at this time. Please feel free to rework (titles and clear descriptions are really important) and resubmit this one down the road.
