When a view has a template applied and you go into Visibility Graphics (VG), everything is greyed out. In order to then edit the View template you have to hit cancel, go over into the properties pane and click on the template to edit it. This is the kind of horrid UI problems that Revit needs to get rid of!
When you're in VG and it's all greyed out Revit should:
A> Tell the user there is a template applied (and which template). and
B> Allow the user to directly open the template from there. E.g. an "edit this template" button.
Thanks,
Glen
