View References in text

View References in text

It is quite common to have general notes or even a text object with a leader that says something like "FOR WIDGET TYPE A, SEE DTL 1, SHT A-101".  But to do this I currently have to either place my text and leave whitespace where I'll come back later and place a separate view reference OR type in the view reference by hand which will require that I manually update it if the view and/or change gets renumbered.

Please allow me to insert a view reference into my text objects.

I'm envisioning something similar to FIELDS in AutoCAD.

I think a useful tool would be the ability to use parameters in text blocks.  For example, if I wanted to write a note line "Refer to drawings E00 for more information."  the E00 would reference the actual parameter for sheet E00.  So if later I renumber the sheets and E00 becomes E10, then the note automatically updates.

Ideally, this feature could be used for more than just sheets but for panel schedules (you could make single lines using this tool alone) and any other design elements.  Some people like to refer to Revit as a database that expresses itself in 3D but we need it to be able to express itself in 2D as well so we can pull design data out of the model.

This is very similar to how ACAD lets you insert a "field" that is linked to the sheet set manager.

The View Reference tool will do what you want to reference a detail & sheet number. Just add the text as suffix / prefix to get it to display they way you want.

I do agree that it would be great to have the ability to add parameters to text, we could then reference materials, keynotes, dimensions, tags, etc... and have them automatically update if functioning similar to a reporting parameter or potentially feed information back into the database

Suggested this in my idea here as a comment: multi-line text parameter formatting options - Autodesk Community

Variations of this idea keep coming up. Sadly to no outcome. It may be completely counter AD policies and contradicting the Revit being not CAD approach. Would love to see this implemented. Even better if it were retro fitted into older Revit versions.

This is definitely important feature that Revit is missing. Hopefully we can have it in near future.

This would be a really nice feature in Revit. It's something I do a lot in AutoCAD with sheet set fields and not having similar functionality in Revit is disappointing.

Currently, if I want to add a note on my drawing with a view reference in the note, I have to use 2 separate objects (text and view reference). Now, if the note moves, the view reference does not, and has to be moved manually. It would be nice if there was some way to embed a view reference into text so that it's 1 object.

Add parameter to a text element. Have it update with parameter.

On sheets you often need to reference object parameters. Right now there doesn't seem to be any way to do that.

For example, insert text that: "Wall has U-Value of {wall-u-value-parameter}"

@DanielKP2Z9V : Do you mean something like Fields in Autocad ? Like Total Length of rebar/road/fence etc = {LengthField} ? It would be awesome. I used to use that to display the total length of rebars on rebar bending details.

@victor_vijeuKD42L yes, that sounds right

It would be useful if you could add a view reference to the end of an annotation, so that in Bluebeam, the person reading the plans could go right to your page, instead of having to type the page number and have them find it.

I just came across this situation again today and was thinking about how great of a feature this would be.

For example, if the number on the following sheet I'm referencing here ever changes, I have to remember to change and update this text manually. This is fine on a small project, but if there are dozens of these to keep track of, it becomes impossible.

I really, REALLY, hope Autodesk gets around to implementing this feature. I use view references coupled with text all the time, and some of those I need to copy/paste multiple times across different views. What's even more frustrating is that text can't be grouped with view references, so I prefer to edit the view reference family to include the text within it. This means that I have dozens of separate view reference family files on my drive and it's hard to keep track.

It would be awesome if there was a way to link sheets just like Bluebeam. Navigating through revisions would be a breeze since every time we make changes to drawings, we can make clouds and write the revision number on the first page and link it, but we cannot just click on the revision number and directly jump on to the revision cloud just yet.

Yes, it can be done by using Bluebeam or other platforms. But having an in-house solution would be great.
