Reveal Hidden Elements shows Objects Hidden by a Filter - in a different color!
The light bulb tool, Reveal Hidden Elements, does NOT show objects hidden by a filter. It's time this is fixed. I suggest filtered objects are shown with a different color.
The reveal hidden has a number of issues, and it is always too cluttered to be helpful. I would like to change it (maybe with an expandable list like pops up with view scale or style) so that I don't see items that are turned off in the v/g dialog (like cad imports, annotations and model elements) and only show those elements that have been hidden in the view.
As a starting point, it would be good to take out the magenta items hidden by category since you can find items hidden by category easily elsewhere. I think the VG dialogue is adequate for finding things hidden by category or filters.
In reality, there should be an option just to show the items manually hidden by element (items not following set category or filter rules). The right click errors that sink elements to the bottom of the magenta sea.
I would say ANYTHING that is hidden by any method other than Visibility Graphics should have a method to "show anyway". This would include phases (if view is set to "demo", but element is in "new construction"), worksets, etc. It takes a very long time to sift through all the other methods that Revit allows to hide in view. I would also think it could be useful to differentiate (in your color coding) between "Hide in View" (element) and "Hide in View" (category). The list of items not shown by "Reveal Hidden Elements" includes elevations with "Hide at scales courser than".
I know!! I hate all those things!! So many ways to make things disappear, and there is more! Small wall segments hidden by a door\window hosted on them, etc.
Objects hidden by various ways make a training topic called "Where the hell did it go" a popular topic requested in any intermediate and advanced class!!
But there is also the abuse, like using phases to control the visibility of objects in projects that have no phases!!
Color coding would be good for all the different ways something can be hidden... but in addition to that or even more importantlywould be a Filter system of those hidden items you've revealed with the Reveal Hidden Elements tool.
As@jkidder said, currently we select Reveal Hidden Elements and it shows (nearly) everything that is hidden in a multitude of ways. If I have items temporarily hidden those appear in blue, other items hidden regardless of method are in pink. If there have been a lot of things hidden in various ways, all of those items make it nearly impossible to find what you are looking for.
Recommended workflow:Select Reveal Hidden Elements, each of the different methods of hiding an element are color coded, a Filter list appears (default to last used) where we can choose from the following list of hiding methods we want shown (one, several, or all). The list would separate items by the method used to hide:
