GRIDLINES THAT INCLUDE THE NAME IN THE DASH

GRIDLINES THAT INCLUDE THE NAME IN THE DASH

On very large projects it is useful to be able to see the names of the gridlines even when zoomed in. I have an idea to just include it in the dash, like this.

To play devils advocate for a moment, at first I was thinking, this is basically asking for complex line types where text could be part of the line type.  See this idea: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/complex-line-types/idi-p/6330340

But then I realized the text on the line would need to be linked to the name of the grid.  So first, we'd need the complex line types; then we'd need the ability to set that line type to be able to use a label parameter and to be able to read from the host (in this case a grid).  Sounds like a valid idea, but then I wouldn't want it to appear all the time, only when zoomed in...  that would be a feat!  Or perhaps the text is so small that you can only really see it zoomed in...  And/or perhaps a way to turn each on and off individually while in the view to allow for large scale detail views.  Any or all of those options would be acceptable in my mind.

Boy this keeps getting more and more complicated, but I think it would be really good!

No, I'm saying, it would print that way, for everyone even in the field to use.

Although some of your related ideas would be cool too.

I really would NOT want it to print.  That's something I hadn't even thought of!  IN that case, it would definitely need to be small, like just barely more than the thickness of the line, so that it wouldn't show up in a typical view, but when you zoom in on the pdf, you'd be able to see it.  Don't want those things all across a print (pdf or paper), that would be way too cluttered!

Totally agree with @Ric_Weber. No idea where you though this was interesting given this is not the standard anywhere and there are basic rules for drawing presentation.

You should focus invoting for all the ideas out there about special line styles with symbols and letters like in autocad.

With that idea you could achieve what you are asking - so no need for this separate idea that can be archived...

Here is some of the ones you need to vote for @anielson:

Request for Feature: Custom Line Type Import in Revit - Autodesk Community

Complex line types - autodesk

PS: I had to use google to find this ideas... The search engine in the forum is the worst I ever seen!!! Get it toguether, Autodesk - if people can find existing ideas they keep posting new ones and not voting for existing ones, making @kimberly_fuhrman-jones job unecessary harder. Maybe merge the above ideas and try to find if there are others I missed - and make them all more visible, please.

And here some other page with examples of the real use of complex line types:

How to create line pattern with text or special characters in Revit

Hopefully this will at some point be merged with the complex line types idea mentioned in another comment. I consider this is a good opportunity to vote for that 'again'. I am not confident it will be implemented any time soon despite its many votes.

I wonder what Revit will make of complex lines showing the grid d (---d---d---d---d---) in a perspective view, probably (--- --- --- --- ---), just like all annotations which somehow vanish in perspective mode.

I don't see what the issue would be, @MiWolff , lines styles are 2D things, so they should always face the "camera"/viewer...

If you want a 3D element you can model one (that is the workarround most folks are using to go arround this limitation when they absolutly must to anyway...).

The fact that autocad can do it with a specific file to manage that, I have no ideia why is it so dificult to bring that to revit. It should have been possible since day one if Revit had been started by the Autodesk team in the beguining - witch was not...

We still need this, even though we have been living without since for ever...

@Susana_Duarte_LMSI , the forum search does leave a lot to be desired, I agree! I find searching for just a few keywords helps, rather than searching for a phrase. 😁

I could see this as a sort of temporary dimension element where when you select the gridline the value appears so you don't have to look at the properties window.

Revit already does this for named reference planes.

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones, to your points about the forum search...  I agree completely.  Although it is off topic of the OP, I propose a couple things to help overall:

At the top of every page of the Ideas forums is a link to https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/community-user-guides/how-to-make-the-most-of-the-idea-boards/ba-p/13...

#1. Make that MUCH more prevalent!  BOLD, FLASHING, COLORFUL!

#2. On that page, really emphasize the best practices to searching!  I agree, fewer keywords are better than phrases.  Sometimes trying different keywords helps to find the idea better.  And sometimes I'll start out with 5 keywords and as I start removing one keyword at a time, that's when the Idea will finally surface.

#3.  Allow for comments to that page where power uses can offer additional search tips.

#4 . Share with the community the best ways to get ideas they really like to get on the Hot Ideas list so that other's may see them also.

Number two big idea, is not only for the Ideas forums, but the forums in general.  Put that Autodesk Assistant to work.  I think this is an excellent opportunity for ADA (as I'm calling her, maybe it'll catch on, LOL) to learn and provide more guidance.

As a test, I tried asking Ada to find me an idea regarding complex line types in Revit similar to those found in AutoCAD.  She was able to tell me about the idea, but then when I asked for a link to that idea, she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about.  So typical.  So I tried to teach her and gave her the answer and the link to that idea.  She claimed I was mansplaining to her again, and wouldn't talk to me any more.  I just don't know what to do.

^^^^^^^^^^^^

The above is entirely satire and meant to be funny...  hopefully.

But that did basically happen, the Autodesk Assistant would be helpful here in the forums, but it would need to get better to really help. In the meantime, less is more when it comes to keywords and searches in the Ideas forums.

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones, if you'd like to move this comment over to the https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/clean-up-the-revit-ideas-forum/idi-p/6911692, that would make perfect sense to me.  (Amazing that when that post was first made, there were only 2500+ ideas....  wow!!!)

@Mike.FORM , you already have that when overing over the grid. No need to select it. The pop over information next to the mouse icon already gives you everything needed, so I really don't get this idea at all.

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones, I searched with only 2/3 words combination: " line" "letters" "style" "type" "custom" "complex", being the first the fundamental one. No luck... I try no not search full sentence like you say. I would like the ability to use "" to force an expression and clean up a lot of bad results - if you could do that simple thing, I think it would be a major improvement.

PS: we should also be able to add/edit better search keyworks to any idea when that was not done when the idea was first created.

@Ric_Weber Just loved your Ada example. Very great points!

@Susana_Duarte_LMSI the hovering functionality in Revit does not always work the greatest, especially when you have to tab to something.

Adding the little blue <Grid A> value appear when you select a gridline would just be a guaranteed visual when the grid head is not visible because you are zoomed in.

As stated it is already coded for named reference planes when you select them, and they also have the hovering info too so why not make it consistent for all types of planes, including levels.

Thanks for all the comments. I went and voted for a lot of those. Although they are not the same idea as mine. Adding text to line types would be great but it would not be a live tag of an element like I suggested.

About the "drawing standards" comment, yes, this is different. But different can be good. Although we should respect that standards came from years of what works for everyone and I mean no disrespect by suggesting something new, I put forth: do drawing standards need to be forever defined by what made sense on a drafting table? Does everyone forever need to follow the gridline out to the bubble to figure out what it is, just because we've always done it that way? I waste a lot of time doing that. And yes, I would also want it to be very minimal and not clutter drawings. Probably smaller than my example screenshot. And I really liked the ideas of it showing up only when you select it, too. Maybe both options could be available.
