Automatically open section views

Automatically open section views

Hello

Simple idea here, but why not automatically open section views when they are created?

I mean, when you made one, what you want is to see it and work on it.

Why add extra steps (succeed in selecting the section line, right click, go to the view...)?

Just open it.

I wouldn't want it to happen straight away as still need to adjust the width, depth, line ends, etc. But if while it was selected there was a button on the ribbon that took you to the view, and if double click worked when the section was already selected that would be great.

I like this idea and voted for it, but I think this should be an option that one could select while creating the sections.  Similar to the Lock option while using Align.  Sometimes you're just going around the building and putting in all your sections and then you'll go back and start looking at each section in turn.  You would not want the section to auto open in a case like that.

@MichaelWarwick7522  With a right click on the section marker, you can select go to view that way.  Two clicks instead of one, but you don't have to go to the ribbon.

FYI, I'm now using Pangolin Magic Section, and it's almost perfect.

There is a third click to adjust the depth, so there's no need to choose a 'right-to-left' or 'left-to-right' direction.

Revit doesn't recalculate the whole project as you move the mouse, and the view opens automatically and immediately. It's not like the Revit section, which takes 5 minutes to open...

The default behavior in Revit should be to open the newly created view. Currently, when I cut a section in plan, my view filters hide the newly created section, and Revit buries the resulting view in the project browser with a generic name. That is both stupid and unhelpful. My suggestion is this. Revit should default to opening the newly created view. There is no circumstance in which I have just created a view in Revit but don't want to immediately open, view, and edit the view before sheeting. That's why I created the view. I want it. Give to me. Stop hiding it. Open the newly created view.

I agree what you describe is my typical workflow but I can think of at least one situation where that would be infuriating: Laying out a drawing set for larger projects where I'm cutting many sections and details in one go to organize and place on sheets.
I think adding this option as a checkbox (default checked) similar to the annotation leader checkbox, would be a good way to go about this.

@DGraham2 @NLFlowersHMC  I'm thinking about it more like the "Tag on Placement" button, where when you place a room, you can have it automatically tag it or not.  So when you place a section (or elevation or callout for that matter) you could select a button that says, "Open on Placement"...  but fundamentally I totally agree.

Try duplicating a view and see what revit does. It opens the new view. Then again consistent behaviour was never one of revit's features. I think for now it is fine the way it is: Setting up a new section will leave that new section selected no matter whether it is visible or not. So users can use the context menu to open that new view. If you need to setup a  whole set of section, elevations and detail callouts, it is probably better not to have all the new views clutter the plan you are working on.

Actually, I fundamentally desagree with the idea that if I create a view I want it to open.

Most of the time, I don't.

I just want to create/duplicate/duplicate as dependent all of them at once, and only when I'm done, I will open and edit each view one by one if needed, some times I don't even need to because what I want ot do is controlable by the property window. (this is true for all tipes of views, not only floor plans).

I save a lot of computer resources and time by having revit NOT opening views unecessary, so my vote would actually go to the EXACT OPOSITE of your idea and the "normal" revit behaviour.

I would welcome if there was an option to open view after creation in the option window so that each user could choose what they like better. Create that sugestion and I will vote for it.

@Susana_Duarte_LMSI, see my and @DGraham2's comments above.  Votes for comments do get looked at as well (or so I'm told).

You and @MiWolff make excellent points regarding duplicating views however.   It would definitely be nice to be able to NOT open those views automatically when duplicating.  Especially when duplicating as dependent!!!  How often are we only creating one dependent of a view!!  So I found that idea out there that needs some love:  https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/top-view-floor-plan-view-when-duplicating-remove-opening-...

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones, now that I've mentioned everyone, I also found that @NLFlowersHMC idea is already out there.  Could you please combine?  Thank you!  https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/automatically-open-section-views/idi-p/11134661

Another nice thing about Pangolin magic views:

Like i said, it's fast, there's a 3 third click to choose side and depth. And i forgot to mention that any new section made with it use the previous one. So you don't have 452 working section views in your project at the end of the day. There only one, you can name it the way you want by default. And if you want to keep it for presentation, you just have to give it a name.

Original revit section function is soooooooooo long.

It's really the best plugin i have.
