License Compliance Unlicensed Serial Number

It would seem that I have been using an outdated serial number for an inactive 3DSMAX subscription...

A few years ago I had to cancel my subscription, mostly because I stopped using the software. When I started using it again I setup a new license on the same account which has been active ever since.  (incoming major and probably life changing problem).. It would seem that 3dsmax somehow defaulted me to the inactive serial number.

I got a letter today from Autodesk Compliance Reps telling me that I have been using an unlicensed version of 3dsmax.  I am freaking out because I have been paying autodesk for using 3dsmax but I have been using the wrong serial number...

I've no idea what to do, can anyone help?

p.s I've already emailed them about this issue.

Not sure what you expect the users of this forum to assist you in this issue.  @TravisNave any other input?

Not much we can do. Do you have a legal version of 3DS MAX?

I was hoping that someone has had previous experience with this, or maybe even how they resolved it?

Yes, I own a legal version of Max.  The problem here is that Max defaulted to the inactive license serial number.

My main concern here is being sued or having some serious legal issues for an honest mistake.

So here's the deal then, as long as you have a valid serial number of Max, you will be okay.  The old serial number probably set off some bells and whistles up at the software prison, so they sent out the dogs.  Generally speaking, when I do an audit, the serial number is mostly irrelevant so long as you actually own a legal seat and you are not over-installed.  So just make sure you have your ducks in a row and proper verification and you'll be fine.

Hello @bertalert,

In addition to the tips and clarification provided by @TravisNave, you might need to update the serial number within your Autodesk 3ds Max, since it's still defaulting to the old inactive serial number.

Please refer to this online solution:

Update Your Serial Number Without Reinstalling Your Software
