LMTOOLS REREAD not working remotely

I have access to the location where the OPT and LIC files are stored. I can modify those files.

I use LMTOOLS with 27000@servername to tell the server to reread the license file. This used to work fine but now the license manager no longer updates with changes to the LIC or OPT files.

The workaround is to have someone log onto the server (remote login) and run the LMTOOLS locally on the server. But I have to bother one of the server IT people to do that.

Recently I had the server updated to the latest version of the license server (this is the Dec 2014 version, 32-bit on an old 32-bit server). Typically the server admin just shuts down the service and copies the new EXE files and restarts the service. So he doesn't actually run a setup.exe on the server. Don't know if that is important.

I'd like to be able to get back to rereading the license file remotely but have no idea why it is not working. The status messages in LMTOOLS show that the remote reread was successful but it just doesn't work.

Thanks

How do you know it doesn't work?  Does it not log itself in the debug as being reread?

This is what is shown in the LMTOOLS Stop/Reread tab for me doing it remotely. Then I would ask the user recently added to the OPT file to start AutoCAD, they would respond that no license is available. Then I would contact the server admin who would remote login to the server and run LMTOOLS on the server. He would reread and the new user would immediately be able to get a license.

Autodesk has suggested that I initiate a remote shutdown of the service and then restart to get around this issue. We had disabled that so I'm considering what to do at this point. A new server is in the works.

You might consider using the LMUTIL.EXE and do it by command line.  You can batch it.  Worth a shot.

Hi Travis,

I was wondering what is the method to restrict remote access. Mentioned in your post <here>. Perhaps this is causing the issue?

Thanks

Unless you restricted it, I doubt it. The debug log should show the reread
including the options file when successful.

It is restricted as far as being able to shut down the service remotely. I get an error message if I try to do that. But I was under the impression that this does not affect the ability to reread the LIC/OPT file.

The exact method to restrict remote shutdown is not clear, I have seen some command line options -2 -p or -local, or perhaps this is stored in a configuration file on the server somewhere?

Do you have access to the manual at all?

Yes we have the manual and I'm going to attempt to blame this on the manual despite the fact that it now seems obvious. On quick searches the manual is very difficult to follow, LMADMIN, LMGRD, LMUTIL, some commands are separate EXE files while the control for them are command line options with the same name, UNIX related information, etc. etc. Add to that everything is remote with another person in another office performing the setup.

Sometimes you need stuff spelled out so maybe this will help someone else:

LMGRD -LOCAL disables all remote lmreread and lmdown functionality through LMTOOLS

LMGRD -X LMDOWN disables lmdown functionality, does not affect lmreread, to stop the service, processes use Windows Services or Task Manager

LMGRD -2 -P restricts lmdown and lmreread

With this working the report is slightly different, it adds "Completed !"
