Cannot perform save this document command because background calculations are in progress/

Randomly cannot save my project. Not sure where this should go in the forums but I work mainly on structures so I figured here will do.

This is the second time I'm getting this error today and I've had work colleagues get similar errors and no one seems to know why or how to fix it?

As you can see from the image there are no background calculations running. They're also all turned off where possible. I have no idea how to get around this issue.

THANK YOU! I didnt even need to copy over the file for it to work

For anyone reading, just in case, note that i beforehand ended the REVITWorker.exe task on my task manager.

It happened to me a few days ago. I was able to solve it by just opening the same file in the same Revit, then changing the window view to the previous project I was having issues with. Then, would either remind you to save your file (depending on how you preset the save file reminders) or let you do it by yourself. I had already tried some of the solutions listed in the forum but I wasn't successful.

There is an element in your file causing this and if you take a look in your 3d view the element will appear with cyan lines around it .... I got the same issue when i create steel structural framing and here is the solution....

1.Find that object in 3D view

2. select the instance

3. click on (edit Family) command in modify tab.

4. Now you are in the family file

5. without any changes in the family just load the family again into your project file & the issue is fixed.

hope my comment was helpful for you.

sorry for any grammar mistakes.

This problem is due to structural connection copy from one model to another model.

This can solve by turn off structural connection in visibility graphics  and try to save the model. this time model will save and u can continue your work.

thank you

Create anew tag family and save it.  This somehow fixes it.

Using task mananger to stop Revit worker, then undoing a bunch of actions and re-doing them worked! Thanks

I haven't had to use Task Manager but I find it often happens again and then I need to close Revit and reopen. It's always associated with steel connections.

We just ran into this issue too. But we're not [knowingly] using steel connections. The user that had the problem has left for the day, but I think he left the model up and 'running' so we'll try these two 'solutions' tomorrow. Since so many people said, "Thanks, this works!" without saying what they tried, I had to see who they were replying to and figure it out.
This is my summary of the two more popular 'fixes':

  • Open another file or start a new project or family, then go back to the 'bad' project and the message should be cleared so you can save. It's unclear to me if the new/other project has to be SAVED first or not.
  • UNDO until the message goes away, then REDO up to the problem and SAVE. This seems awkward, but better than nothing, I guess.

Update/Edit:

Opening another file worked for us this morning. Also, meilechTPVL4 verifies that it just requires an Open.... no Save is necessary.

In my experience, simply opening any family (or project) will fix the issue. Just that, no saving.

A great work around that I find resolves this is open up another new project, then close the new project.  Seems to be a glitch but this trick regenerates the existing model where the background calculations are running, and removes the warning.

the same issue of saving or doing simple orders was not possible because of background calculations,,,
I simply tried to open a new Project then close it and it worked !!🤓

+1 on the new project for the win! Thank you, PSmart17, your suggestion of opening a new project worked for me!

If my answer got you moving forward, please mark it as the solution! (helps me build my nerd-credibility! 😉 )

We can make the 'new project' workaround even better, just open two project and switch between them whenever this issue occur.
It doesn't need to be new project, just change the current project and all those calculation will be stop.

Mind you that sometime Steel connection wouldn't work properly should you switch project while it still doing calculation.
After changing type in property the model remain the same, shorten does not working etc.

You would need to change that Steel connection to something else and back to what you intend for it, again.

We still need Autodesk to fix this for us.
