Walls have framing.....

Walls have some kind of framing (unless they're concrete and/or block).  So why does Revit not include framing in the walls?

 

Allow us to specify the

  1. top & bottom plate sizes
  2. stud size & spacing
  3. what size header is needed (this would probably need to be some kind of formula:  Opening< 5 = 2 x 6, Opening< 0, 2 x 8 etc.
  4. how should the top/bottom plates tie together at the corners.

Allow us to override the framing members if needed (like we can with trusses).

 

Similarly:

  1. We should be able to tell a roof to place a specific truss at a specific spacing.  The roof would need to have "regions" one region might use a truss while another region might need rafters/joists.
  2. We should be able to tell a floor to place a specific floor joist at a specific spacing.  As with the wall, it would need instructions for dealing with openings (i.e. stairs) so that it can place the required headers.  There'd have to be a way to enter a maximum joist length and a required overlap length. Revit would need to place two joists sistered together if the floor were to require a longer joist.  We would need to be able to manually move the location of the overlap so long as both joists stay within the length tolerance.  Then we could place a beam and any required posts under the overlap ourselves (I'm not suggesting that should be automated too).

This would help with creating a correct model and with the process of generating accurate sections.

I  have just submited this idea which is made of two basic points :

1 - Walls (simple and composite) to embed curtain walls as framing, not just as openings

2 - Curtain walls to host structural framing, not just mullions.

Please vote for it if you think its needed.

Autodesk, its 2023 and you still have not fixed this! WHY !

Though not specifically about framing but related Autodesk need to allow  short lines like this idea: Allow us to Draw Small Detail and Model Lines - Autodesk Community

 

this is an extract from a framing system that uses 0.6mm thickness of material as apposed to the 0.8mm currently allowed by Revit

as mentioned there too it can have an effect on designs like to name a few:

  • weight per individual item
  • weight for a group of items
  • Dimension spacing between items
  • Dimension Tolerances in tight spaces

Let us: select a wall -> edit profile -> *add framing -> *select wall layer ->*sketch extrusions onto wall profile->*select a material for the extrusions.

 

This could be an easy way to implement framing in revit. I know there are plugins that do framing but we need at least some basic framing capabilities in revit. This could also be a solution to add to ceillings, we could just sketch the rafters in the "edit boundary"-option and revit could automatically extrude the sketched extrusion to the thickness of the wall or ceiling layer we sketched in.

 

Now you could also add a visibility toggle or a a phasing option for the generated frame for display purposes.

You could use the generated extrusions in schedules (longest line in extrusion for length of the stud, truss, etc., depth of wall layer for width etc.).

There is a real need for a feature that allows users to associate wood framing elements around openings in wood walls, enabling parametric relationships based on opening size and location.

 

Currently, we can model or copy openings from architectural linked models into the structural model, and these openings display correctly in load-bearing wood walls. However, what’s missing is the ability to create a parametric association—similar to how steel connections behave—where framing components (such as wood posts, headers, and lintels) can be defined and dynamically linked to an opening. Ideally, these framing assemblies would adjust automatically (“flex”) as the opening size or location changes and could be easily propagated to similar openings across the model for efficiency.

 

At present, we have no native tools in Revit to achieve this functionality without relying on third-party software or entirely separate modeling platforms. As a structural consultant, coordination with other disciplines and clear communication of design intent are crucial. For wood structures, this process is significantly more time-consuming than for steel or concrete projects. While I don’t need to model every stud or joist, I do need to represent the key structural framing accurately—and Revit makes this unnecessarily cumbersome.

There will always be value in specialized third-party tools that produce highly detailed shop drawings showing every stud or fastener. However, what structural designers truly need is a native, user-friendly, and efficient solution to represent major structural components in wood-framed projects—facilitating coordination, improving productivity, and maintaining consistency across disciplines.

@wr.marshall I appreciate you bringing attention to my original post. However, I’d prefer to keep this request separate from the broader discussion about native fabrication-level modeling tools. My suggestion focuses on a single, specific coordination feature, while the other thread seems to address a much larger workflow enhancement that would likely take years to develop.

As mentioned earlier, there are already several third-party add-ons that handle detailed fabrication modeling for wood framing. But as structural consultants, our coordination typically stops at defining maximum stud spacing — we don’t usually coordinate individual studs with architects or mechanical engineers.

What we do need are native, user-friendly tools that make it easier to coordinate key framing elements (posts, headers, lintels) around frequently changing openings such as windows, doors, and mechanical penetrations. These elements move often during design, and keeping thousands of framing members updated in Revit is a very time-consuming process.

My post focuses on addressing that coordination challenge with a simple, targeted tool — something that could have an immediate and meaningful impact on design-phase coordination, without requiring a full fabrication-level modeling overhaul.

Of course, having full fabrication capabilities in Revit would be amazing, but I believe starting small would deliver faster, practical value to many users right now.
