View Range Control via Section Box in Revit

View Range Control via Section Box in Revit

Current Situation:
In Revit, users currently define the view range (Top, Cut Plane, Bottom, and View Depth) by inputting numerical values. While this method works, it can be cumbersome, especially when fine-tuning the view range to display specific parts of a model. It often requires trial and error to get the exact visual result.

Proposed Solution:
Introduce an option to control the view range interactively using a section box, similar to how 3D views are manipulated. By enabling users to adjust the view range visually in the plan or elevation view, this would offer a more intuitive and efficient workflow, allowing for precise adjustments without relying solely on numerical inputs.

Benefits:

  • Enhanced User Experience: This would make the process more intuitive, especially for users who are not familiar with precise numerical inputs or who want to make quick adjustments.
  • Improved Workflow Efficiency: Reducing trial and error when setting view ranges would save time, particularly in complex projects.
  • Better Visual Feedback: Real-time visual feedback on what parts of the model are included in the view range would reduce the guesswork and make it easier to achieve the desired display.

Industry Alignment:
This feature aligns with trends toward more intuitive, visual design tools. Similar visual manipulation tools exist in other design software, so incorporating this into Revit would be a natural enhancement to its user interface.

Provide X x Y x Z dimensions in Section Box Properties to better control the visibility ranges.  It would be nice to be able to just set a dimension to a section box so it's easier to control what they show rather than having to use the little adjustment arrows. The would work like a plan view's view range.

instead adjusting plan view range in 2d view , by linking 3D view to this plan view through 3d orientation to Specific plan view, and adjust section box limits which transferred to plan view as view ranges values, will make an ease for users to control what to see by adjusting it in 3D environment instead of 2D.

I would like to see this feature, and it seems like an easy add.

I’m studying a sample Revit file in preparation for a new job in the office. As I was thinking about how to pry apart this sample model to see the plan views in 3d, this approach just occurred to me. If a plan view already has a view range set for it, why shouldn’t the user have the ability to go to a 3d view (section box) of the plan where the extents of that section box are pulled from the view range and the crop extents for that plan? For a past job, lacking uniformity from level to level, I’ve made my own section boxes to approximate a 3d view of those plans. It didn’t occur to me, then, that this could/should be a purpose built feature in Revit.

genius idea !

Not Voting against this, but also add the posibility - View range control by story above

All this feature needs would be a way to draw (or enable) a reference plane in a section View; the user could slide up or down and have Revit grab those coordinates for your Cut plane.

"What you're  describing @pencilboxis that there should be a way to activate a view range display in a pop-up window, where you can actively drag the Top, Cut Plane, Bottom, and View Depth?"
