Selection priority of MODELLED elements

I would like to see inherent priority selection of modelled elements.  For example, ANY 2D object should NEVER be automatically the first item to be selected when hovering over or selecting an element with several in the same location.  Girder beams should be first priority over beam systems etc.  etc.  Less time spent repeatedly tabbing through multiple items would be great.
