With the amount of time I spend trying to NOT select surface patterns when modeling I am very surprised to see that this idea doesn't have more traction. When selecting an object Revit seems to prioritize surface pattern lines, which seems backwards to me. Most of the time when I'm trying to select an object I want to select the object, not the surface pattern. Having to constantly zoom in to click between surface pattern lines or tab-tab-tab-tab-select to get to the object totally breaks flow state when modeling.
So, yeah, one of the following options would solve this frustration:
selection filter for surface pattern lines (OP's idea)
global hotkey to hide/show all surface patterns
prioritize object when selecting, and require tab-tab-tab... in order to select the surface pattern
And it's not just a problem when modeling. Any time I'm trying to annotate or dimension in a view that shows a lot of surface pattern lines I am constantly fighting Revit's prioritization of surface pattern lines. There are some occasions when I want to align, dimension, or select surface pattern lines when annotating views, but they are by far in the minority.
