Revit should be able to rotate linked .ifc files

Revit should be able to rotate linked .ifc files

My company currently has hundreds of files that we are converting from another design software into Revit.  The best way for us to convert these files is to export to a .ifc so that we can link them into Revit.  Unfortunately, you can not rotate the .ifc file to orient it correctly in the project.  Out work around is a multi step workflow of exporting to .stp, importing to AutoCad, and then linking the .dwg into Revit.  We do not have a need to modify these linked files, but we do have to orient them.  Please add functionality to be able to rotate a linked .ifc file.

Agreed I ran into a problem awhile back where I could only rotate IFC on a level plane. However I needed to be able to rotate it on elevation plane due to the orientation being wrong. Due to this I had to "bind links" in order to rotate as required.

Hi, I also agree, that this would be a nice feature. Especially if you work together with structural software. They often have a different Z-Axis orientation, so files are upside-down.

wr.marshall, I had AutoDesk Tech support make the recommendation to "Bind Link". The issue is: If you recreate the .ifc file for any reason, you will have to remove the .ifc, re-link the recreated .ifc and then go through the process of "Bind Link" and re-orient the model again.

Would those who are running into models coming in with an incorrect Z axis orientation be able to share what the original authoring application is and how these IFC models are being generated originally?

mike.engelN6XLY, The original software that I am actually exporting .ifc files from is Solidworks and Bentley OpenBuildings Designer. The .ifc files that are actually posing the biggest problem are the Solidworks files. I have no option with the Solidworks, because we receive many Solidworks files from vendors and contractors that we work with.

Hi, I just encountered the same issue today. And by accident i found out the you can actually rotate the IFC when you do it in a Floor Plan View. (without binding it)

This works in revit 2022.

Hope this helps 🙂

Cheers

@mike_engel The IFC model we received was produced by Microstation Open Building

Although AD probably considers this implemented now, I recently ran into this problem again when I tried to work with an ifc that originated in Revit and was returned to it from Trimble Nova. It turns out we either need to licence some 3rd party app to remedy this or use the manual floor plan rotation approach Miru is describing.
