Remove Element from Design Option Set

Remove Element from Design Option Set

It's a simple, small idea, but useful I think. We currently have a designated button that takes an element from the Main Model and adds it to a Design Option Set ("Add to Set"). But there's no method of removing an element from a set and putting back in only the Main Model besides deleting it and copy/pasting, which doesn't feel as legitimate as adding it does. It may work for components like furniture, but when it comes to walls and such, you have to verify that the heights are correct and that it's attached to the appropriate elements around it.

Just add another button: "Remove from Set".

Autodesk, please create a way to remove objects from design option sets. It's crucial to the design process and would help the work flow a ton!

I totally agree. It is frustrating when you want to remove an element from design options.

Kindly consider this urgent.

At this point it's just sad how stagnant development has become on autodesk products.

Why is this not implemented yet. With cutting and pasting your element will not only lose data, but you will also lose all annotation attached to this element. What the frisbee Autodesk!?

I want to extend on this Revit Idea with the function that users can add an element to another Design option WITHIN THE SET when it is already in another Design Option in the SAME SET.

Right now you'll get the message that the element is already in a Design Set. YES I KNOW I put it there myself, now let me also add it to another option in the same set.

The workaround right now is:

  1. Cutting the Element from the Design Option
  2. Cry because I lost 10+ hours of annotation work
  3. Paste it in the main model
  4. Add it to the Old and the New Design option, because now all of a sudden it is possible....

THANK YOU AUTODESK....

Still not understanding why it wasn't there in the first place. When you make an option to add to something, make the reverse available too.

Please add the remove from set option.

Autodesk? Hello? Anyone there? At the least comment that you took notice of this and hopefully add a timeline to it that possibly this issue might get fixed some cheerful sunshiny day in the future?

Meanwhile I'll put my hopes in following this discussion...

@teja_katta I think you've misunderstood. What we want is a way to move an object from a design option to the main model WITHOUT getting rid of the other design options. We would like a reverse of the "add to set" button. As the original poster said, the only way to get a an object from a design option to another design option or the main model is to cut/copy and paste. While this will get the object where you want it, it removes any connectivity, which is a particular problem for any MEP systems or walls or structure.

It's 2023. How is this still an issue?

Autodesk, please add 'remove from Design Option' button.

Come-on Autodesk !! The addition of REMOVING objects from sets would be so, so useful. It seems crazy that ADD is available but not REMOVE.

I agree this is a feature that needs to be added, and hope it gets added to the roadmap, but I suspect that it will take some restructuring of code to make it happen.  Lets give Autodesk some constructive feedback about why we find ourselves needing to remove elements from design options (vs accepting a primary) and how we expect the tool to be used and handle errors.

There are three scenarios where I find myself needing to remove an element from a design option:

  1. When it was added accidently to option(s) in a set and it is not a recent action or there has been a sync so undo is not an option
  2. When I click "Add to option" while editing an option and the item is added to the active option, rather than all/multiple options in the set.  The element needs to be removed so I can switch back to the main model and add it to the correct option (a secondary button or dropdown to bring up the dialog for adding to sets while being in an option would be nice too!)
  3. When a portion of a design is decided and needs to move back to the main model, but the remainder of the set is still being decided.

I would expect the "Remove from option" button to be located in the ribbon with the "Add to Set" button.  It would be active when elements in the active option are selected.  When clicked, the selected options would be returned to the main model with all current associations and settings.  If returning it to the main model creates overlapping elements (the element being returned exists in other options) I would expect a yellow warning box, ideally with the option to intuitively and easily delete the overlaps in other options, but at least providing a notification of overlap so I can manage the elements in the other options.

The last scenario happens most frequently, such as:

  • the option set for a reception area that includes a few waiting spaces.  The waiting area design is decided and needs to return to the main model, but the reception desk options are still in discussion.
  • A design option set for a conference room is created with multiple options.  After exploration it is realized that a portion of the layout is the same in every option.  That portion needs to return to the main model so we can continue making minor tweaks that are visible in relation to all the layout options without duplicating efforts.

I believe design options should be treated the same way you would a 'Model Group' or a 'Workset'. Both those options allow user the flexibility to add/ remove elements to suit designs as the design changes. This is a very efficient and effective way of furthering our models as the design progress.

Design options should not be a 'rigid' tool, especially when one is trying different 'options'.

This is what happens when you allow an AEC software monopoly  to take shape.

I also can't believe this is an excluded feature.

Agree, it would be great to have ADD and REMOVE buttons available for design options.

In the meantime, here is a solution that might help.

Not having a remove from option set is a big pain, please add it to Revit LT Autodesk
