OPTION FOR AUTO-CAPITALIZATION

OPTION FOR AUTO-CAPITALIZATION

MANY ARCHITECTS USE ALL-CAPS ON DETAILS AND DRAWINGS FOR CLARITY.

CURRENTLY, A REVIT USER MUST MANUALLY TURN CAPS LOCK ON AND OFF VIA KEYBOARD.

BECAUSE REVIT USERS ARE TYPICALLY WORKING BETWEEN REVIT, EMAIL, TEAMS, ETC, TO COMMUNICATE WITH TEAM MEMBERS, WE OFTEN FIND OURSELVES WRITING EMAILS OR OTHER PROJECT CORRESPONDENCE IN ALL CAPS, WHICH IS OFTEN INAPPROPRIATE, AND WE OFTEN HAVE TO CLARIFY THAT WE ARE NOT YELLING.

IT WOULD BE NICE IF THERE WAS A FUNCTION WITHIN REVIT TO TOGGLE AUTO-CAPITALIZATION WHEN TYPING IN SHEETS. ADOBE INDESIGN CURRENTLY HAS A SIMILAR FUNCTION THAT WORKS WELL.

(NOT YELLING).

I don't know if I understand your statement correctly but we have this option in Revit.

All caps is not for clarity, is hard to read (because of that I decide to not read your entire post). If used, should be only in small notes.

It's only used because of traditions, when the drawing where made by hand and templates it increase the consitency to the letters.

Currently there are typefaces that looks like all caps, E.G.: Technic.

@francfiles Thank you! That is helpful, but not quite what I'm suggesting:

The capability you've mentioned requires a user to select into an existing text box that is currently not in all caps in order to change it. This workflow works only for a single text instance at a time and doesn't address the bigger workflow issue of a user constantly having to toggle caps lock on and off when working between programs.

The capability I'm requesting is more like the automated feature found in Adobe InDesign, where a user can specify that all text on a sheet (or within a template) will have all caps text, so when you add or modify text on such a sheet, the text automatically is all caps without having to toggle the caps lock key. Said another way, Revit would "know" through a setting that all text on a certain sheet should be capitalized so a user would not have to hit caps lock to write in all caps. This could be a setting that could be toggled in the annotate tab on the navigation bar, and would automatically apply to all text on that sheet. I think this capability could be one useful way that Autodesk could automate documentation, which I understand is a company-wide goal.

Like an automated global setting that every time you're in Revit, text will always be typed in upper case. I totally agree with this proposal. I have to say, we encounter the exact same scenario so I sent out an email explaining that I'm working in Revit and not yelling.

@samuelsanf Architects use all caps as an industry standard because lowercase letters often look very similar to each other in different orientations. For example, the letters "p" "b" and "d" are the same shape in different orientations. If you can imagine the word "up" written in lower case will look like "dn" when it is rotated 180 degrees, which is not clear at all! All capitalized letters are visually distinct and can be understood in any orientation (same example: UP vs DN will not get confused).

@adobbertin So we need to found new glyph for 6 and 9 because someone can't figure out if is holding the drawing upsidedown?

But I get the idea, I would find helpfull if Revit had the All Caps options for Text notes Families and Schedules (appearance tab) but not for all the program (as it have for Bold, Italic, Underline)

@samuelsanf Can you clarify your argument on the 6 vs 9 comment? Please remember that the industry standard (and the workflow problem I raise) remains whether or not you agree with it.

The solution to bring the "all caps" option into the text type is interesting! I think that could work. However, it could also result in a proliferation of text types and if someone toggles that on and off for a particular existing text type, it could change text in unintended locations. What about using the same toggle you suggest, but on a per sheet basis? (having the check box in the sheet properties, for example) That seems more controlled from a documentation standpoint.

Not agree. Someone that wants all the text in caps, only have to mark the hypothetical checkbox for all cap in the text note types already have in the project.

But, I refer back again. typeface Technic looks like caps in lowercase.... so, you only need to use a similar font.

There are Ideas I considers priority for text notes, like "element properties" and "view references inside text notes"

I think an "All Caps" type property would work perfectly!

There is a key board shortcut to change to all caps after typing, or just capitalize the starting letter of every word,  which is what I prefer:  Shift-F3 is a life saver.
