OBJ file support

OBJ file support

OBJ files are a very common format for 3d content and yet Revit, a 3d application, still cannot import them. 3D scans/reality capture for as built models often come in this format and are inaccessible on this platform. Point cloud files also cause issue because they typically aren't view able in visualization add-ins. I don't see why Revit lacks support for this commonly used file format that is well established. (OBJ's have been around longer than I have)

I see this on the roadmap, but would this include material mapping (texture coordinates /uv mapping) and smoothing groups (or hidden edges)?

Congrats! We think this is a great idea, so we've decided to add it to our roadmap. Thanks for the suggestion!

@Tarek_K

How is this implemented? The feature is half-complete. Planar faces should not be heavily tesselated, this makes editing them a chore and increases the file size! Please address these mesh tesselation issues!

When opening a Revit file in 3ds Max, this wall comes in like this:

Geometry wise, it is much clearner from FBX.

There should be controls for how the OBJ is exported, similar to the controls 3ds Max has to import Revit geometry:

See: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/obj-export-add-controls-to-change-the-output-mesh-results...

Also I just found that obj imports do not offer any object snaps - despite the name of the file type. Tested in R23. How is this considered implemented?

All,

The original ask to be able to import an OBJ file was implemented. If additional functionality is needed, please add a new Revit Idea for the request.

Thank you.
