MEP Space Manual Modification

MEP Space Manual Modification

I would like to be able to modify the shapes/boundaries of individual spaces or combine two spaces when needed. Sometimes there are errors in the architectural model that cause spaces to be placed incorrectly but also not be modifiable. A drag and drop interface similar to the way you can change a space vertically would be great.

Are you aware of "Space Separation Lines?"

These allow you to define the outline of your space with your own lines.

Tell us how you would expect "combine two spaces" to work?

Yes, I am aware of space separation lines.  They are definitely helpful when you have one space that needs to be split into multiple spaces. However, if an architectural model has an open area that was drawn as multiple rooms (with no actual walls) but we need to treat them as a single space, I would like to be able to delete one of the two spaces and then force the other space to expand to fill the entire area. Currently the only way to do that would be to turn off room bounding for the arch model, but that breaks the spaces everywhere else.

I agree that would be useful.

Hopefully you can see how you have given more insight into why you are asking for such a feature, and why, being unclear, you have left it open to interpretation. With luck, the forum moderators who scour this site will now have more insight into what you were requesting and wouldn't dismiss it, as I did, as a feature which already exists.

Please try to be more specific about your problem in future!

I am not trying to be difficult, I want Revit to be the best it can be and would love to have the feature you've suggested, but it wasn't clear what you were asking for. Hopefully they see where the problem arises and improve the way spaces react/can be manipulated manually!

As an engineer in a MEP firm we frequently have to link in architectural models into our models.  The issue we have is that architects almost always use rooms for different reasons than we do.  I have multiple large hospital projects where the architects used rooms separation lines to define the outline of the beds in rooms because they wanted to know the free area of the rooms.  When we  link that into our project then we have to place multiples spaces within a single space in order to capture the total square feet and volume of the room.  This plays havoc on load and ventilation calculations to the point where they are almost impossible to do in Revit.

I would recommend researching a way to separate spaces from the boundaries of the rooms defined by architects.  With them being independent it opens up the utility of spaces and allows MEP firms to use them for the original intent.

To some extent, I agree with you on that -- but decoupling them entirely removes a lot of the speed associated with using spaces (autoplacing, autonaming, etc). I think the specific example you've mentioned should be a conversation with the architect to encourage them to use rooms properly and use some other tool to get the free areas of rooms. That might accomplish more with less frustration when compared to a workaround for decoupling spaces/rooms.

I totally agree with what Moodyj2000 said.
We have also abandoned the use of spaces for the same reason.
We have also abandoned the idea of reasoning with all the Architects we work with. Mission impossible!
