This seems to be such a basic thing-why can't you sort it Autodesk? The only solution seems to be to buy a plug in. If I did that every time I wanted a basic thing I would spend double on Revit that we already do. At nearly £3K a year it is cripplingly expensive as it is..
Give us "measure in 3d" please! It should be as simple as pressing one key.
When I started using Revit the lack of this feature just blew my mind. I still can't wrap my head around that Autodesk built a 3D collaborative modelling environment without giving users the ability to check the relative position of objects in 3D space at a glance. I mean, Revit must know where the objects are already, right?
This functionality is super useful, not just for fluffy conceptual design modelling, but also for checking the location of 3D models from consultants which otherwise are more time consuming to get to display correctly in plan or section views.
Currently, Revit makes it difficult to perform quick measurements in 3D views. The lack of a native "tape measure" tool means users must rely on workarounds (section boxes, temporary 2D dimensions, reference planes, or exporting to Navisworks). This limitation slows down workflows, adds unnecessary clicks, and often pushes teams outside of Revit just to confirm simple dimensions like clearances between pipes, ductwork, or equipment. A light 3D measurement tool, similar to Navisworks or SketchUp, would save hours of productivity. Keep users inside Revit rather than exporting. Reduce frustration for modelers, coordinators, and reviewers.
I'm in Revit 2024 and I can measure in a 3d view... I forget which version they added that, but is that what you're referring to? What version are you using?
Thanks for pointing that out! I’m on Revit 2024 as well, and yes, I know you can create dimensions in a 3D view if you enable annotations or even use the existing Reference/Aligned Dimension tools. But that’s not what I mean.
What I’m asking for is a simple measurement tool in 3D that includes snapping to edges, corners, and faces, which would be lightweight for quick one-off checks and similar to the “Measure” tool found in Navisworks or SketchUp. Like below. [image: image.png]
The current workflow (placing dimensions or reference planes) feels too heavy when all you want to do is check a clearance or verify a distance. A true snap-based measurement tool in 3D would really improve productivity.
Does anyone know if Revit 2025 added this, or is it still only the dimension workaround?
You CAN use the Measure Between Two References tool in 3D. It will snap to the 3d model. You can even use the chain option and measure along several connected paths. I'm fairly sure this is what you're talking about and it's already there in the Modify tab, Measure panel.
