The generic model line-based family sucks. Currently, it can not be used for curves at all, and has less functionality than equivalent, category-locked families. I suggest either:
That the generic model line-based family be updated to have the same functionality as the structural framing families (ie. the concrete beam), including the control of geometry location relative to location line, offsets, rotations, etc. This behaviour would be beneficial for all manner of content creation, as it would give users the ability to make line-based, sloping, curved elements accurately and parametrically.
Or:
That we are given the ability to change the category of structural framing families to suit the purpose of the custom family, such that graphics and filtering are not affected by cowboys using the best family category for the job at hand. The first of these options is obviously preferable as it will not create analytical model elements.
