FILLED REGIONS : We need Filled Regions -with pattern parameter in 3D families

FILLED REGIONS : We need Filled Regions -with pattern parameter in 3D families

What happens currently?

  • At present filled regions are only available in 2D family templates.
  • We can add a masking region to a 3D family, but never a Filled Region.
  • Ridiculous workflows are currently required to create parametric pattern options (especially for our plan
views) simply because the filled region tool is only available in 2D family templates.
  • We are also unable to import detail items in to 3D families (Another wish-list item, which I will log separately!) so we have no way of getting patterns into 3D families.

What we need, instead

  • It would be very useful to be able to add a filled region into a family, especially in plan or elevation
views, where a solid white fill might be undesirable.
  • There are many times when a masking or filled region is more appropriate to create patterning
than using 3d geometry with material settings.
  • Teams need to be able to create BIM-Integrated presentation plans that do not need to be imported into Photoshop or another external product in order to add colour  or pattern accents in plan or elevation views.
  • Whilst we support the model focus in Revit (always) there are times when presentations are required that simply should not warrant complex filter rules and overrides that limit flexibility and alienate beginner to intermediate level staff.
  • Please make pattern parameter instance and editable from project environment! We do not want to create different family types just to add a pattern or colour change to some items in a view. (That would be an insane workflow!)
  • Please see attached images for more specific explanation.

PLEASE VOTE

1. For this functionality so that we can all avoid time-consuming and unnecessarily complex work-arounds when our projects require more flexibility in presentation.

2. For some other ideas (listed below) that may benefit your project teams too.

Why allow masking regions and not filled regions??  If the concern is drafting patterns, can't it be like materials?  Materials don't allow you to assign a drafting pattern as a surface pattern...

Totally agree Chris. This limitation is just crazy! Is it so rediculous to imagine that Autodesk’s clients might want BIM models that also generate sophisticated, elegant and premium quality documentation to match? Does Autodesk desk really think masking regions will suffice in all instances? Speechless!

Another use case is for symbols that have some geometric relationship to the model element. For truely annotative symbols a nested detail item works, but not where, for example, the length of the symbol is the same as the length of the object. In this case drafting patterns are usually more useful than model patterns.

Current work-arounds include using a filters and overrides to apply a pattern, using a material, and draughting over manually.

Hi Michael, Thanks for adding this example too. We definitely don't want to be stuck with these work-arounds. thanks for chipping in! M

In a brief chat with Rodd Perey he mentioned one of the great features of Masking regions is that "they can mask according to the order of the work planes that they are attached to." This is definitely a key fearure. We need same option for Filled Regions in all 3D family templates please.

Good suggestion, been bothered about this too.

Yes, I fully agree.

  • when a family uses 2D representation in elevation or floor plan, it is most useful to use masking region. But you can not adjust the color or pattern of masking region. If you then want use this family in colored presentation, this family is always white which is undesirable

Dear Autodesk Dev team,

We have some high profile Revit experts agreeing that this is essential. Please see what can be done to assist us with this fundamental functionality. It is so important to have this option as professional content creators.

Can we please have a response from your Dev team to let us know if we can get this request reconsidered?

The ridiculous workflows that this significant software limitation causes is CRAZY!

Please help us get this over the line.

August 2021: CAN WE GET AN UPDATE PLEASE?

Thanks Michelle

Congrats! We think this is a great idea, so we've decided to add it to our roadmap. Thanks for the suggestion!

This is fantastic news @kimberly_fuhrman-jones !!!

It will make such a huge difference to Revit content creators. I am very pleased that it has been accepted. Please can we have the opportunity to speak to your development team, once, just to make sure they understand exactly what we are requesting.

We have extensive content creation experience. I am confident that a quick chat to make sure that the new feature will solve multiple workflow problems that we currently experience would be well worth the investment in time.

Thanks for the great news! Any guide as to when we might be able to expect this additional functionality? (Excited!)

Have a great festive season, everyone.

Hi, @michellevankolck4401 ,

Happy New Year! Unfortunately the one question we can't answer is "when?"! Stay tuned! You can always join the Revit Preview to follow the progress and test new features in development. To join, email [email protected].

Thank you!

Kimberly

Status changed to: Implemented

We are pleased to say that this has been implemented in Revit 2023! Thank you for your contribution to improving Revit!
