LINE WORK: We should be able to copy or paste between 2D and 3D families

LINE WORK: We should be able to copy or paste between 2D and 3D families

What currently happens?

  • Nothing. Error message we get if we try “Can't copy 2D element(s) into a 3D family.”
  • Question we have is : Why not?
  • Ramification in terms of time wasted on production work-arounds is enormous!

What we need, instead

  • When we receive great 2D silhouettes or shapes that could be used and traced for 3D extrusions
we cannot simply copy and paste any traced elements from a 2D family to a 3D family.
  • The sketch line work from a Filled or Masking Region should be able to be copied into a 3D family
  • General symbolic line work and text should also be able to be copied from a 2D to 3D family. (and
    visa versa)
  • Should apply to line work (1) inside and/or (2) outside of sketch mode if at all possible.
  • Even importing 2D detail item into a 3D family is significantly impaired. The 2d component can
only be imported into a plan view. We should be able to import any 2D element into any view
type by nominating work plane or view.

PLEASE VOTE FOR THIS HUGE TIME-SAVER FEATURE!!

Please see another of my requests for Development team to review.

We need your vote please to get these items across the line too. Thanks in advance!  Michelle

I would export from 2D to dwg and Import that into the 3D rfa. Tab select would sometimes work - not too good with bezier curves. Another workaround I use is to trace images of let's say 'a silhouette entourage shape' (jpeg or png) in Adobe Illustrator and export to DWG from there. It is much cleaner. Autodesk would actually do much better by copying some of the Adobe UI.

Hi Andrew, We had many curves, as you can imagine and we tried many things. Your work-around ideas are interesting too but I guess the crux of my argument is for none of us to have to do work-arounds.

Please check out my other posts too since I am trying to boost their priority so that the Autodesk team can see that these wish-list items are important to solve. Cheers M

Agreed. This is a dumb limitation and I don't see why a user can't simply copy lines from a sketch of a masking region in a Detail Item family to a sketch of a masking region in a 3D family...

  • It's all essentially 2D information.
  • They are both real world scale elements, EG: I'm not copying from an annotation family...

Thanks for support Chris. Your experience is extensive and your comment will hopefully mean that Autodesk will take my relentless feedback on board and make necessary changes. I don’t think we should have to wait more than a decade to see these key Family Editor issues fixed. It’s obvious that the Revit Family Editor development team need to listen to experienced content creators to understand exactly what we need.

don't get me wrong! agree with y'all... but if there is one thing I've learnt from autodesk it's a complete understanding of fatalism and to keep working around their flaw$ with patience. it still is the best tool out there atm. 🎈

Hi Andrew, consumers will only remain loyal for so long, if they don't feel heard or valued. It would be foolish for any industry leader to assume that there is no formidable competitor on the horizon. Not all opponents announce themselves before they arrive  😉

Dear Autodesk Dev team,

Clearly this limitation cause significant frustration for us, as end users.

Please see what can be done to assist us with this fundamental functionality. We appreciate that you are overwhelmed with endless demands but the Family Editor is overdue for a significant overhaul and we have seen very few features appear in the content creation area in the past decade.

Since it is usually SME (subject matter experts) that create the bulk of Revit content, the screams of frustration may not be as loud as please for general project modelling features, but that does not make them less relevant or important. Every Revit project relies on and is directly limited by the tools that we have at our disposal, as Revit content creators.

I am absolutely confident that if any of your development team members were making families, at a professional level - whilst trying to meet high project demands, they would fight to re-evaluate the effectiveness of our current Revit Family Editor.

The Revit Family Editor needs a re-boot or at the very least these key features added:

August 2021: CAN WE GET AN UPDATE PLEASE?

Better yet. instead of redrawing the 2d in symbolic lines in the same family, can we not project the lines to a plane where all the important line work is shown (and add some extra linework on the same plane). The work around is to redraw and add visibilty controls of the line work. This adds extra steps to do one thing which is to represent the 3d element in 2d representation.
