Existing Rooms in Demo Views

Existing Rooms in Demo Views

I understand that Demo is an action that exists in New Construction, but the industry as a whole usually tags existing rooms in Demolition plans - not New Construction rooms. This is due to the complete picture of an existing floor plan created by Existing to Remain elements + Demolished elements.

The only options we have come up with to fulfill this set requirement are either to overlay another view on the sheet containing only existing room tags, or to use a dummy tag (yuck!). Help us utilize the intelligence of Room information to benefit our set!

Currently, once a room is placed the phase cannot be changed when selecting the room. This needs to be updated so that it can be changed upon selection. Additionally, it should have a schedulable parameter so it can be changed using schedules.

I would like to add that rooms also should be in multiple phases and not just change phases (and lose the old phase when they get assigned a new phase). Many rooms stay the same over many phases.

Please also include spaces to have this feature.

This was already talked about a few years ago but we are almost in 2024 and this major feature still hasn't been looked at. So I wanted to bring up the awareness again.

We need the ability to phase and demolish room elements like you would with doors, walls, etc. As of now you really only have two options:

1: create a dummy annotation family that looks like you room tags and place them in the view. The cons of this are if you have multiple areas to work with you have to copy and paste them around.

2: create a specific view that has its phasing set to Existing and create the rooms in that plan, then hide all your elements except for the rooms and the room tags. Then you can overlay that view over you demolition plan. This is a little better as you have actual rooms you can schedule if needed but then you run into the issue of fighting two views that are on top of each other. This can be fixed if you place your existing room view down first then the demolition view.

I am not a fan of "workarounds" as they can get complicated and are a major time waster compared to if Revit could do things like this natively.

Uh, why don't you just place rooms in the demo plan? You can even copy and paste rooms that aren't affected by demoed walls so you don't have to fill them out again.

And, while I understand why some people want rooms to have phases, I understand why Autodesk isn't jumping into it. This isn't a black and white issue. Adding phases to rooms would have a lot of consequences, some of which don't have obvious answers.

Idea: Room Phasing Parameters.

I've seen many issues about Room Phasing on the forums but not sure I've seen and actual request for the ability to phase rooms in the Revit Ideas yet. At the firm I work for, we deal a lot with existing institutional and hospital situations so there's a ton of demo work that we need to coordinate and schedule. Currently our work arounds are: creating a Room Schedule and adding rows of data depending on what we need to show (for example, existing room finishes, etc.) or the ol' Room "Copy-Paste" method.

I'm not sure of Autodesk's reasoning here, but having a phase control parameter for everything except rooms makes no sense to me especially since we can also cross reference room parameters with other family types like doors, electrical fixtures, lighting, etc.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi,

As we tackle large-scale projects that span multiple phases in a single model, it becomes impractical to copy rooms in each phase just to show them in all phases, now you have room names and numbers that are duplicated in the project, this just adds confusion and can be misleading.

Would like to know why rooms can't act as any other model elements in Revit?

Thank you,

I create an existing view with only rooms and room tags visible then overlay that on the sheet with desired plan.

REVIT STILL SUCKS IN 2025

Hi, Please make rooms have the same phase choices as regular objects, so that they still exist even when the phase changes. A lot of rooms in a remodeling/renovation project are kept intact, and it would be a much better workflow if one could choose to demolish those that aren't, but the rest keeps visible in the model. Going crazy having to copy all of the rooms for every new phase. Thanks.

This idea is still relevant. When we have to show demo plans and still display existing rooms (that differ from the proposed) we need to have the ability to show existing rooms in a previous phase, in the same way you can display a wall or anything that has been modelled.

@harlan_brumm Do we have an update on this? Still not available in Revit 2024

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To improve the display in renovation/extension phases, we could add the Demolition phase to Rooms.

At the moment, it is impossible to show demolished walls and the Room associated with those walls in a Demolition phase.

The only current workaround is to use a View Filter.

@AMarinoGIET

#1. Please remember to search before posting a new idea.  A search of "Room Phase" brought up this idea from 2018 https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/existing-rooms-in-demo-views/idi-p/7925035 and has quite the following.

And #2. Please remember that is in the vernacular of Revit, Demolition is not a Phase, but an Action taken place during a Phase.  That may be simply a translation issue, but I wanted to make sure you were thinking about that correctly.

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones could you please merge this with the above idea.  Thank you.
