I would like to be able to change the local file location to a separate folder when I'm creating the local file.
I want this because Revit creates all these other files and folders in the same folder which becomes quite a mess when I have several projects that I'm working on.
So what you're really asking for is a Per-Project local file location, rather than a single default area. Update your original request to reflect this and you'll get more support.
Plenty of room for interpretation with your OP. Currently a per project local file location isn't a revit feature but why do you need it? Local file location is only a backup location, you shouldn't be opening projects from this location.
In the Windows Domain Startup script, I added some lines to create a Revit-folder on the local pc. Then I use the Login script to change the file location in the user's revit.iniProjectPath (NirCMD comes to the rescue) to point to that previously created folder. All Revit local files get stored there. And to clean that folder, I again use the Startup folder to delete all files / folders older than 30 days.
One solution to this is to uncheck the create new local file. Allow Revit to open the Central file. Then you can do a Save As, which will create a local file and allow you to save it where you want to. This obviously opens the door to forgetting to Save As and means you are working directly in the Central file. However, as much OCD I am about file and folder location, I am more than willing to allow all my local files dump into a single Revit Local folder, then purge that on an as needed basis.
Creating a new local file every day is 'best practice' developed by users over the years. There where times when continuing work with an already existing local file could lead to synchronization trouble.
