Complex line types

Complex line types

In Revit the  lines types you can have is really pathetic compared to AutoCADs - dashes, dots and continious lines. (And the ofcourse the Insulation that has its own button to make, and the revision cloud if that counts...). Would be very helpful to be able to make various line types with shapes in 2d - like tracks, talus and I thing that was already suggested - with text in it. Out from deperation (again) we are using detail line family with text in it to display  ELEC, HYDRO, Xs (for fence), etc... but comes a curve and there the solution stops. We are also forced to do untinkable things to a surveyors drawings in order to preserve their line types in Revit.

In Illustrator and Archicad you can create lines with double strokes thus allowing you to create these kinds of lines:

This could also be used to overlay a dashed line on top of a solid line to create railroad lines, etc. It is a stacked wall if you will in Revit terms, but then for linetypes.

For utility scale solar projects it is necessary to be able to link civil 3d files as well as survey CAD files that traditionally contain complex linetypes. It is imperative to render these complex linetypes in Revit with minimal effort in order to coordinate electrical revit designs with civil CAD designs. The lack of support for complex linetypes makes using Revit a liability for this sector of the industry.

This feature request has been "under review" for 5 years.  Come on now.

Even if the Line Pattern Properties only offered a third type of Text and the value could be any ASCII character code.  This would get the basic site utilities covered.

Echoling that this is a huge limitation for our firm in terms of being able to make more migration from AutoCAD to Revit for P&IDs. We use several patterned, complex line types that as of now I could only recreate in a repeating detail component and just sort of hope follows ISA standards. Linking an AutoCAD file ought to be able to properly display these lines especially given how old the technology is.

This has become an issue for us as  the owner.  To comply with building life safety review and inspection requirements, our life safety linework for all projects must include pattern, text, and color,  matching stringent review requirements set for the University Hospital.  Projects are now commonly documented wholly in Revit without AutoCAD ever being used as an additional overlay to fix Revit shortcomings such as this one.  To offer some solution to our design teams, I have created the detail component family to match the linestyle requirements as others noted above.  I have also experimented with dynamo scripting to place these lines over fire rated assemblies, which covers most conditions but cannot satisfy all documentation scenarios for partition ratings (e.g. curved walls and multiple rating classifications on a single partitions).  Please prioritize this improvement in Revit to assist our design and construction clients achieve documentation requirements efficiently!

Thank you very much for posting this. As we move to models that last the lifetime of a building, this is becoming an urgent issue instead of an annoyance.

It would be helpful if, as AEC software, Revit was capable of producing documents conforming with typical building codes. Building codes that all Autodesk clients use could really inform the underlying vision and values for guiding some of the software development. As several people have pointed out, this idea isn't about "This is the way we always did it." It's about "we need this to do our job well and meet the basic requirements of our profession."

Les styles de ligne doivent contenir des éléments de texte modifiables tel que (CFO, CFA, etc...) et intégrable dans les fils de liaisons électriques .

Seriously, it's been 8 years since the OP and it's still not a thing? Never mind "BIMing", this has been the convention for longer than we've been drafting with computers.

I think we should be able to create new line types in revit as well as in autocad. Otherwise, the line types in the imported dwg file come as straight and dashed lines.

I have seen no activity on this subject. However, it should be a priority. In the AEC world, the end product is not the 3D model, but the set of prints that you can distribute to contractors for bids, submit to agencies for review and approval, present to owners, etc. In many cases, a shaded 3D view of the systems is not sufficient. Reviewers and estimators like the single line representations of piping systems, fencing, property lines, power lines, etc. with symbols or letters embedded in the lines. These linetypes are easier to follow than simple linetypes with the occasional tag. This may be one of the reasons why so many civil engineers work with AutoCAD or Civil 3D instead of Revit.

After 6yrs of being requested, how is this still an issue?

UPDATE NEEDED!

Looking for an update as well. I'm wanting to make a line style with text. I agree that this is well past being incorporated into Revit for the length of time this thread has been on here!
Autodesk - update please! - where is it in the process?

Just like that we are almost at the end of 2022 and Autodesk has rolled out yet another version without fulfilling our requests.
