BIM 360 Docs and Revit files and publishing

BIM 360 Docs and Revit files and publishing

* local archiving - ability to have automatic saving of a local copy of BIM 360 collaboration version onto local machine or network for company archiving.. in case Cloud is not accessible and for company archiving and recording

* ability to publish PDF sheet set directly to BIM 360 Docs in Project Plans, as a version update similar to publishing the models, both from the print dialog as well as from the publish dialog

* easier method of managing linked Revit models in the cloud by ability to directly link Revit models using the models already in the cloud

* cloud based shared parameters files

Hi @Anonymous, i am just starting to use the BIM 360 publishing feature for a client and came across your post.  Right now seems the only way to download the latest local copy is to click manually on a download icon.  Could you elaborate on what you mean by "automatically save a local copy of BIM 360 collaboration version"....Would this occur everytime a user click on the "Manage Cloud projects' and opens the specific project on the cloud?  I do like the part where you mention to have the ability to publish PDF sheet sets directly, that saves time for having to create a set manually from the in house network.   You did loose me in the "easier method of managing linked REVIT models....and also the last idea, cloud based shared parameters - i guess what would be the function of the last two?

I would like to see the prompt to save an archive local copy of the file at the point of sync to central.. similar to the save interval for typical saving and syncing.. but yes, also and most specifically at the point of the Manage Cloud Models.. because it’s at that point that a user feels the project is ready for publishing to others.. and therefore one would assume would also want a local recorded copy of the files.. especially if there are linked files and more then one

"I do like the part where you mention to have the ability to publish PDF sheet sets directly, that saves time for having to create a set manually from the in house network."

Yeah it makes more sense to publish the PDF’s at the same time as you publish the models.. I’m also fresh into using the cloud for my collaboration and getting my feet wet for the last two weeks.. I tried the markup feature for a client meeting yesterday and that failed miserably due to the clunky tools they give you for markup.. I’m hoping to post to the idea board this week on my experience and hopeful improvements in that area as well.

"You did loose me in the "easier method of managing linked REVIT models…."

I have a project that is a master file, which links to the topography as one file, a garage as another file, and a house as the third file.. these are all stored on BIM 360. If you click on the master file on the web, or the iOS app, directly from the Project Files area of BIM360 where the files were published when Manage Cloud Models has finished.. the linked files do not appear in the master file. In order for me to have my clients, or team, see the linked models in the master.. I have to download all of the files from BIM360, and then upload them as linked to another folder.. and select the parent file.. Considering that the linked models are already linked using BIM 360.. it’s odd that the linking is not retained when simply publishing to the cloud.. it’s just more steps that shouldn’t be needed since the team should be able to reference the publish location of the files.. and then the clients would reference the “copy” of the files, so that you can control the visibility to the client.

"and also the last idea, cloud based shared parameters - i guess what would be the function of the last two?”

For the team collaboration it would be nice if we could reference a perpetually syncing (but available offline) Shared Parameters file.. so that all users in the team have the same shared parameters to pull from.. and do not need to maintain their own local copy, either on their own workstation, or their own local network..

I see @Anonymous, good ideas i like this. Me too, i have been trying to get used to the publishing aspect, and it looks to me our client does have it set up right now so that there is a "perpetual" share folder with the models available for all disciplines to pull from.  You do need an easier method of managing linked Revit models in the cloud.  I hope this idea gets heard.

It's a necessity that all project entities collaborating have the possibility to comfortably and, if possible automated, generate local archives/backups for legal and archiving purpose.  Autodesk shall provide a solution which is document proof for legal aspects.
