Better Functionality for Legends!!

1.  Ability to Tag Legend Components

2.  Ability to rotate Legend Components

3.  Option for "Floor Plan View" for Floors, Ceilings, etc.

4. Ability to Override Graphics, apply Filters, etc to Legend Components

Work arounds for these issues are too many, and leave too much room for error.  A legend should be representative of the items in your model.  It should have as much functionality as your floor plans do because it is meant to be a visual guide of the items in said floor plan.  MUST HAVE FULL FUNCTIONALITY!

This is aggravating, I use a design option and a floor plan I order to show Duct/Pipe System Classifications and have them show the tag with the abbreviations. That way when a user modifies a system in the model it updates the legend automatically vs it being a line in the legend with dumb text on it.  Other example of using a design option and a floor plan instead of the clunky Legend view is that I can drive instance parameters for dynamic families. We have a family for VAV boxes and there is an instance controlling neck size by cfm input and formulas pair with lookup tables. There is a lock out of it snapping the neck to 0" if the user has not input either a cfm or a override value. Basically the Built in legend cause the family to only display in the "Size Does NOT Exist" state (frailly turns into a ☹️ shape) but the floor plan allows me to set the instance parameters to have the family show as desired. I don't want to make separate "dumb" families for legend purposes

Legend improvement is one of the most overdue improvement, something every project has to deal with.

As someone who proselytizes the power of Revit, I'm always embarrassed to explain to new employees how limited the Legend functionality is in Revit and how it completely misses the mark and does not meet the basic needs of the industry. Would be great if this finally got fixed.

This is especially embarrassing because it's easy to do in CAD, has been reported for 7+ years. We feel ignored here in this basic tasks that we have to do on every project. Would be great to have a workflow that works with our basic documentation needs.

We are in 2022 now. This is so Frustrating! Is it possible to Tag Legend Components? Have some Project and Shared parameters to be Tagged as they constantly gets updated. Using text instead is so tag is so Primitive and increases the chances of human error . Legend Components seems half baked/restrictive because of it.

Can Autodesk Please please address this issue? Either fix it or atleast let the users know why they don't have the option to TAG!?

Everything here is spot on. Legends are an absolute mess and there are a plethora of improvements that have to happen.

At minimum, the process to even place a legend component has to improve. Having one tiny drop down menu that includes every single family type in the project is outrageous.

Hi @kimberly_fuhrman-jones I just realized that there is no mention of improving legends in the public roadmap. This is a basic feature that is used on every project and it is quite broken. Would it be possible to give it some love in the future?

As someone whop trains new Revit users coming from CAD, I'm always ashamed of having to explain why Revit Legends are so broken and underwhelming. This is more important than all the fancy cutting edge AI stuff, because every project is affected by the lackluster/broken basic functionality.

~6 month bump on this. @Samuel.Arsenault-Brassard is 100% correct on "underwhelming". AI is great but unless the AI is making a legend, users won't want to use the AI when they are struggling with page 1 of a set of drawings.

Hi @kimberly_fuhrman-jones at a minimum, I would say:

• Ability to annotate legends with real tags that can gather the parameters
• Ability to dimension/snap to legend lines
• Ability to section legend components

I would recommend doing a lot of dog-fooding and going beyond this however. There are lots of mentions of requested improvements to legends, but this would be a really good start. Thank you for being so responsive, I really appreciate it 🙏

Without that legends are pretty much dead in the water for MEP and really only draughting views which you can put on multiple sheets.

For architecture (door schedules with curtain panels) add:

Improving legend capabilities is one the most important weakness of the software in my opinion and should be one the most top priorities for future versions. Current Legend components in Revit do not meet the requirements for smart BIM software. Legends components should be live taggable, rotatable, dimenstionable, and be available in all direction of the component. That also would be great if legends views could be populated automatically like schedules and keynote legends and can filter their data by sheet.

Ditto on this one. At the moment, we are having to create our window, door, wall, ceiling, floor, roof, etc. schedules outwith Legends in the model, creating additional phases to ensure that said elements dont show up etc., all because of a few limitations of Legends...otherwise the idea behind Legends is great...it just doesn't fully work...still after so many years... 😞

What is most absurd, is that even in Autodesk own Legend example images there are Tags and Texts, probably written in dumb text note manner. This is BIM in 2022, jesus christ. What is the point of legend if you cannot tag elements shown there?!

I've been waiting for years and nothing have been improved. I don't understand why Autodesk doesn't adress this issue, it's key for correct documentation in almost every project. 

If you don't know how to program these funtionalities, at least buy a plug-in out there. 

It's embarrasing to pay 3000€/year for Revit and can't do this simple tasks.
