I have a project in REVIT 2017 where i had modeled framing on floors 1 thru 10. The beams and channels were modeled individually, i did not copy or create similar any other 3D elements. REVIT somehow began assigning the beam cutback values to 7'-9 1/2" extension so i ended up with my beams and or channels all extending past their desired point 7'-9 1/2". I am confused as to why REVIT automatically defaulted to such a value. Intuitively when one starts to model elements there would not be any thought process that would deem that one has to check the start and end cutback values if modeling and not copying any beams. This caused me to have to go back and do alot of rework because just simply clicking on a beam and changing the cutback values or start/ end extensions to zero did not solve the issue. REVIT still recognized or kept the true cutback value and grayed it out so that if one erased beams around a certain beam the beam then extended itself to beyond its point. I am thinking in the long run REVIT should have a feature that warns a user the moment they start modeling that the beam is defaulting to an arbitrary reference and be given the option to toggle off the default for the beams drawn hence forward. The option would give the user ability to toggle on/off the default value or even to eliminate it altogether if in the future it would not be needed. If REVIT can give warnings that dimensions will be removed when editing modeled elements it should definitely warn the modeler when modeling framing, especially when models are being work shared and many users are working in the model and may not be aware that a default value or custom value has been used for other elements.
