AI Test-Fit Generator Using Existing Revit Geometry

AI Test-Fit Generator Using Existing Revit Geometry

Idea

Allow an AI agent connected through Revit MCP to generate architectural test-fit floor-plan options within existing building geometry.

The architect could identify an existing floor or tenant area and provide a program consisting of rooms, quantities, target areas, adjacency preferences and other design constraints.

The MCP agent could then generate several preliminary test-fit options directly in Revit.

Inputs might include:

  • Existing Revit floor plan
  • PDF or CAD background
  • Required rooms and target areas
  • Occupant count
  • Adjacency requirements
  • Public vs. private spaces
  • Required furniture or equipment
  • Existing columns and shafts
  • Existing plumbing locations
  • Required exits
  • Accessibility constraints
  • Exterior windows and daylight preferences
  • Spaces or elements that cannot be moved

The AI could produce multiple alternatives using Revit Design Options, for example:

Option A — Maximum Efficiency

Option B — Strongest Adjacencies

Option C — Maximum Daylight / Perimeter Access

Each option could include:

  • Walls and doors
  • Rooms
  • Room names and numbers
  • Preliminary furniture layouts
  • Area calculations
  • Circulation
  • Basic accessibility clearances
  • Proposed exit paths
  • Room/area schedules

The agent could then compare the options quantitatively:

  • Net programmed area
  • Gross area
  • Circulation percentage
  • Number of required rooms achieved
  • Rooms below target area
  • Adjacency requirements achieved
  • Travel distances
  • Exterior-window access

Example prompt

“Test-fit this 8,500 SF existing floor for a dermatology clinic using the attached program. Preserve the existing core, exterior walls, structural columns and plumbing risers. Generate three alternatives and summarize the tradeoffs between them. Do not overwrite the base model.”

The intention would not be for AI to select the final design. It would rapidly produce viable starting points so the architect can compare alternatives, exercise professional judgment and develop the selected scheme.

All generated options should remain clearly separated from the architect's approved model until explicitly accepted.
