Without tooltips, artists spend hours hunting down parameters one by one. Expanding the tooltips would transform Maya/Arnold from a research-heavy software into an at-a-glance, self-explanatory software. That way artists get instant answers without ever leaving the UI. A few settings have tooltips, but most don’t and the advanced ones really need them the most. The Arnold & Maya documentation already has most parameters explained, turning those into hover tooltips in Maya would be a total time saver. Hey Autodesk,      Why not Having some public roadmaps? I think that would be a fantastic step towards your community. It will show that you guys care about your users. I've looked over my previous opinions on Maya and want to provide a more directed approach to my concern. I feel it's difficult for new artists to get into Maya. The student license being limited to no commercial use makes sense. I feel for solo projects and selling assets on store fronts, it should have the same limitations as the indie license. Becoming a student for Maya is made less appealing knowing you can't use anything you make as a student. Most newcomers will not consider the idea of being unable to sell the assets they make with the license until a professor tells them or they hear it in passing. I'd like Autodesk to update these licenses so assets can be legally sellable after buying a license, as long as the license purchased is applicable for how the asset being sold.   The trial is currently 30 days. It's very difficult for someone to find the time to properly learn Maya in that time frame unless they don't work or have no social life. This accessibility of Maya is major hurdle for a lot of newcomers and a major reason people turn away from it, especially hobbyist.   Stripped down Maya (My original suggestion, updated) Currently, Maya has a lot of tools that hobbyist and independent artists won't use. I feel a cheaper or free version of Maya with just poly modelling, UVs, rigging, and animation would benefit Autodesk. These tools would capture the attention of people in the hobby sphere and bring in new users who may eventually purchase a full license. This would also enable hobbyists and newcomers a way to get familiar with Maya over a longer period of time without sweating the most basic knowledge. More tutorials would also exist, and thus a larger and more supportive community willing to help each other.   Maya without exports A education version of Maya that strictly allows users to make models and save in MB or a cloud save (with a file size limitation) that could be recovered upon purchasing a license.   Currently, I'm looking at graduating soon. I will likely be sticking with Maya simply because it has stream lined a lot of things that were hurdles for me while trying to learn Blender, prior to college. I did, at one point, look at Maya and didn't consider it for a moment. I would have spent that year learning Maya over Blender had there been an accessible way to do so. The only reason I switched, was because Maya is what my college taught. Autodesks hold on the industry will be harder to maintain as other options become more viable and preferred by smaller studios. Less and less people can afford college in this economy. I was barely able to get through college with a part-time job while living alone. Unfortunately, Autodesk is blind to the efforts of other software in user experience. What has Maya updated in the last decade? Well, I changed the set of icons and bought several plug-ins. However, many modeling nodes are still single threaded, and there is a lot of pressure when dealing with high model. Sculpture seems to have been updated a lot, but the promise of 2016 is still not realized. I don't know what the developers feel when they see it. Mash has no point data cache, and some operations have to be performed in nodeediter, So why not upgrade nodeEditer and why can't nodes be packaged? (if you can package, many problems will be solved, and the complex deformer node network is no longer complex), is the operation logic after Maya node flow or history stack? Whether Maya can have an efficient and convenient history editor has been a similar question for ten years. I know you've been working hard on Bifrost, and I know that all the functions of Maya can be reconstructed in Bifrost, but who cares about low-end users? I hope Maya can change. Show More

Hello, I recently graduated with my diploma in 3D Animation.  Our primary animation and modeling software was Maya.  After graduation, my subscription wanted me to pay a lot of money to continue using the program.  I have not been able to gain employment, but I do want to continue practicing and learning with Maya.  I cannot work with any of my school projects without it.  My idea is that for many previous students, we can't afford the subscription if we don't have a company to work for that supplies it.  Getting a position requires constant practice.  I would prefer to use Maya, but am currently learning Blender, because it's free.  I am also an experienced Adobe Editor/Animator and am paying for that subscription: it's extremely affordable at $79CAD/month. It would be great if Autodesk could provide a price range that is more affordable.  More people would subscribe.  In my case, I would just love to be able to do more practice projects as a postgrad.  If I could get the student subscription (free) for at least one more year, or even 6 months and then a more affordable version afterward, that would be amazing.  Thoughts? Maya has some great hotkeys to speed up workflows, but many are hidden behind menus or not visible at all unless you hunt through the docs. It would be great to show the hotkeys relevant to what you are currently doing in an un-obstrusive place in the UI.    Show More
