Recreating Materials and appearances after corruption, assemblies open slow

Hello,

I am currently working on creating a new custom materials and appearances library to replace our existing library which has become corrupt. I have only created the library, and have set it as the active one. However when I open up legacy assemblies Inventor takes forever to load and "spins". I have not swapped the materials yet in our custom sheet metal rules, but I hesitate to move forward due to this delay when opening assemblies. Initial tests show that purging and updating the materials and appearances does not correct the slow load times. There is no delay when opening a template to create a new part. Some insight would be appreciated, and having Inventor yield some information about what it is doing in the background at times would also be a nice addition (for troubleshooting) in the future.

Regards,

Tom

Hi,

What if when you have no custom  library and only use the inventor and autodesk library?

Are the files also slow then?

I think the performance has to do with something different.

Could you test it with only the Autodesk libraries?

bradeneuropeArthur,

Hello, and thank you for responding. I just tried swapping to the stock libraries for both Materials and Appearances and the assembly (with 6 parts) still loads slowly. I tried process explorer but it gives no information, and unfortunately Inventor does not have a debug mode which could provide some insight about what it is doing. I should have mentioned I am working on this locally, so network is not an issue.

I know that the sheetmetal rules we used are tied to the materials/appearances and within it are linked to GUID's. My plan was to change all the sheet metal rules to use the "Generic" material. Then wipe the contents of the old custom library and copy the contents from the new library and lastly change all the sheet metal rules back to their new names thinking that should get the GUID to match the new ones. Most of the names for the new materials are the same and I have added some new ones but have yet to create sheet metal rules for them.

Tom

Hi,

The performance issue is not library related I think, because these are eliminated.

Could you send one of the ipt files and the project ipj file?

I just tried another project with just our original custom library and the default Inventor libraries, the assembly opens very quickly. Is it possible that having the original custom library as well as the new custom library which contains the same material and appearance names is having some sort of conflict?

Please see the attached .zip file with project, assembly and parts.

Tom

For the rest, these files are opened quickly with no problem at all.

Those are locations we have for standard parts that we re-use. They can be removed from the project if you wish.

I just read your last message as well and that is odd indeed. Perhaps something else is interfering, however when I create, close and re-open new assemblies I have no issues. I am really not sure what could be causing the differences in load times that I am seeing. I do appreciate your help, thank you.

I just substituted the default SheetMetalRules.xml file for the one we have containing all of the custom sheet metal we have entered and the file opens up as expected (fast). So my guess is that the GUID's do not match and that it then performs an alternate search which slows down the process. I have attached the SheetMetalRules.xml that contains our customization. Is there was a way to pull the GUID from the new materials to manually edit, what is the correct procedure to force the sheetmetal rules to update to GUID? Perhaps switch it from one material, save and then switch it back...

Tom

Seems strange that already created files have a conflict with the defined guid's!

I don't know if this is right since I don't see the issue when opening files!

Hi,

Additional Question from my side:

  • What kind off assembly is the assembly you send. I see a strange folder/browser structure!
I am curious about the method you use to accomplish this!

@Anonymous Do you have any idea, regarding my question.
