Drawing - Replace Model Reference

Talayoe

Good day all,

I have wondered if anyone else has noticed that in 2022, if I have an IPT file (pre-existing and also an IDW of said part), and I change the actual file name... for example

Shaft.ipt (pre-existing)

Shaft 1a.ipt (used windows explorer to change file name manually)

Now when I open the pre-existing drawing file, it gives the normal unresolved error. I head to Replace Model Reference and it shows me nothing in the box.

If I am not mistaken, in previous version, you would at least get the unresolved like to change this, click on the explore box, and put it to the new file name. Now I get nothing. Even out of the replace model reference, I dont have the design doctor lit up to show me the error.

Not sure how to update these model references that I need to change (glad I didnt do more than one yet!). We are just going to a different filing system so these need to be altered a bit.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Randy,

The behavior does not sound right to me. If possible, please share an example that exhibits the behavior here or send it to me directly johnson.shiue@autodesk.com.

I would like to understand it better.

Many thanks!

What happens if you open the drawing deferred?

I did as you requested and now I actually get less options. Never having used that before, what is it suppose to do/accomplish?

Tks!

  1. Drawing views will not update according to the model files!
  2. drawing opens quicker
  3. you have better performance in the drawing

I see exactly the same behavior.  If I open the drawing, skip resolving the link, then start the Replace Model Reference Tool, the dialog is empty, no references available to be replaced.

Of course, we can just Resolve Link properly when opening the drawing to begin with, or right click on the name of the drawing at the top of the browser and choose Resolve File.  But this should work the way it did formerly.

If you were to use the design assistant on the drawing and renamed the file that way you wouldn't need to worry about the link being broken. You could rename the part associated and all would open fine.

Hope that helps.

Hi Folks,

This is getting a little bit confusing. I think there are multiple issues here. I am trying to understand it better. Randy's issue seems to be related to replacing model reference a renamed assembly and unrenamed parts. He sent me the files. But, I need to confirm the behaviors.

Sam's issue regarding Defer should be different. But, I cannot seem to reproduce it. @SBix26, Could you share the files with me?

Many thanks!

I'm merely reproducing what Randy wrote in his original post, regarding a part file and the drawing made from it.

After changing the filename of the drawing and opening it (skip resolving file at that point), the Replace Model Reference dialog is empty.  I did not mention Defer at all.... ?  And Randy's original post didn't mention anything about an assembly, so I'm confused, too.

But, for what it's worth, the attached files show the problem-- these are 2022 format files, and I've renamed the part file (added a 't' in front of the name).  When I open the drawing file and click Skip on the Resolve Link dialog, then try to use Replace Model Reference, I get a blank dialog.

@SBix26@johnsonshiue
I opened your files with the beta update 2022.1 and the missing reference is displayed properly.

And let me redirect you here to discuss about the lack of API to manage the model states while replacing document in drawing, ability that Replace Model Reference has implemented.

@SBix26 Thank you for confirming that I am not totally nuts lol

Originally there was nothing to do with an assembly. All be in the parts  and drawing file I sent to @johnsonshiue had 2 part files and one assembly file, plus the drawing file. I sent it all just to keep cohesion with the drawing.

Either way, I am seeing the exact thing that @SBix26 posted with the blank out replace model reference window. I did download your Bushing part and drawing file and I get the same thing, go to replace the reference and it comes up blank.

A couple of comments/wonders/thots;

@blandb mentioned design assistant to internally rename file and thus avoid the error situation. I cant say as I have ever done this and would like to give it a try. If I can open all the drawing files and internally rename the part files from there, it may just be a better option than renaming externally, trying to remember what I named it to (if its largely different), opening the drawing and trying to resolve (once I get this problem fixed). How do I use this feature?

@johnsonshiue the defer was given as something to try in the 3rd post by @bradeneuropeArthur. It didnt seem to change how the behavior went at all. But I appreciate learning that I can use that 😉

Thanks all! Appreciate all your time!

Hi Folks,

I think I understand the issue better now. It is a case that everybody is right. There is a bug here in 2022 RTM, as Randy and Sam pointed out. As Isacco pointed it out, it has been fixed on the internal build targeting 2022.1 update (July). The update is undergoing final stage of validation. It will be available some time in July. A testable patch is available on Inventor Feedback Community (https://autode.sk/InventorBeta) at the moment.

Many thanks!
