To celebrate my acceptance to the Autodesk Expert Elite program, I wanted to create a character that represented the entire creative pipeline I am passionate about, from concept design and modeling to rigging, FX, and animation. This project became both a technical showcase and a personal milestone, bringing together every stage of the process into a single character.
What makes this character especially meaningful is that the idea was born back in 2007, when I was just 13 years old and teaching myself animation through flipbooks. Alongside this article, I’m sharing the original personality test animation I created at the time. Looking back, I can see countless mistakes, and I laugh at many of them now 🙈 haha, but they are all part of the journey.
In the same way, I’m sure that a few years from now I’ll find things I would like to improve in this new iteration as well.
Even in that very early version, one idea was already clear to me: I wanted to communicate emotion not only through facial expressions but also through the hands, ears, and the entire body language of the character. That intention became one of the core elements I wanted to preserve, so during the concept phase I made a conscious effort to define and reinforce those expressive qualities from the very beginning.
The entire modeling process was completed inside Maya, using tools such as Booleans to merge the initial blocking, along with Remesh and Auto-Retopology to significantly speed up production. These workflows were complemented by Maya’s sculpting tools to refine the final forms. For the fur, I used XGen to achieve realistic FX-driven grooming and simulation. I also relied on Mudbox for texture painting, as I enjoy having complete control over every brushstroke. In addition, all grooming maps—including density and clumping maps—were hand-painted in Mudbox.
For rigging, I took advantage of Maya’s comprehensive toolset, utilizing everything from traditional joint-based systems to a variety of deformers. One of Maya’s greatest strengths is its flexibility in combining multiple deformation systems on a single geometry, allowing for more expressive, elastic, and appealing character performances while maintaining full artistic control.
This project was an incredibly emotional experience because of everything it represents and everything it celebrates. Becoming an Autodesk Expert Elite is a dream I have carried for many years, and I hope I can live up to the honor. More than anything, I hope you enjoyed this character as much as I enjoyed bringing it to life. 🐰
