XML Reporting Editor

XML Reporting Editor

There should be an editor for the report templates.  While editing the xsl style sheets is nothing more than editing a text file, the format and the lack of documentation make it a daunting task for a regular user.  Any of the VBA or .NET reports have to be edited by someone familiar with programming.

At the very least, simple formatting, data order and precision should be available for the user to change in the editor.

After seeing web design pages and surveys that are drag and drop, it would be so much easier for the average user to create and modify their own reports if that type feature was added to the reporting side of the software.

Formatting & creating your own report should be much easier. It would be real nice to be able to bypass using Excel or another program to get the report ready for printing.

We, the users of Civil 3D need better options than xml/xsl reports, better options than hitting a "print" button and getting an html file in our temp folder.  We cannot keep having to revert to IE9 to get reports to function.  We need to be able to customize the content reporting.  We should be able to use a GUI based system that allows us to create FUNCTIONAL reports.

At the very least if you're going to insist on utilizing the web browswer to display the report, allow the user to create a template using HTML of how they want their report to look.  Provide "Starter" templates that are already compliant with the latest browsers.

I should be able to format ahead of time what I want to see, rows, columns, units, precision display etc.

Then I should be able to have a report delivered to me in .xml, .pdf, .txt, .xls, .doc, .rtf as I choose. The report should be created and ask me where to save.

Getting a report should not depend on having an archaic browser set as my default.

If you havent seen the project explorer by 3AM solutions. Then i suggest you check it out. It does a fantastic job of creating custom reports out of a "redesigned" toolspace. There is also a product from civil plus, called visual report designer, but its a little convoluted to use.

project explorer $600 , VRD is about $800. right now VRD supports calculated fields though and Project explorer doesnt. Im talkign to the developer to get him to add it soon though.

Despite all this though, i would like to see C3D team either buy one of these products and incorporate it into core, or produce somethign similar to it.
