Custom Compulsory Fields in a CR

In our workflow, we want the user to pick disposition options from a picklist before initiating the CR. However, as that column is not a compulsory field (like Revision Note/revision type) there is no check if that information has been filled. 

We would like to be able to set certain attributes as required for a CR to start (and potentially adding a bulk selection of a value similar to revision note when multiple items are present).

Thank you for submitting to the Upchain Idea forum. Today there are no capabilities to stop users from starting a workflow if any specific attributes besides Revision Type and Revision Note are not populated.

You could add an Object Decision at the start of Workflow where you can check for those values which are mandatory for your business. You can add one Object Decision per attribute or combine them together and put the workflow creator as the owner for that step with the possibility to reject a WF.

Can you share more information what is the problem you are trying to solve for your business by having custom pre-release mandatory fields?

Hi Tomislav,

We are using the CR's to indicate inventory disposition using a custom picklist and that's a field we want to be filled out for all parts in a CR. Making it a mandatory field ensures that user's don't forget to select from the list. Ideally it would also have a bulk select option like we have for Revision Note so it would be easier for the user.

I will look into the object decision but that's workaround as it will only take place after the CR has started so users would have to reject CR's and then create a new CR adding all the items back individually which can become tedious.

You can set up your rejection criteria to mark Items that are missing the values and move those items back to the development state.

For example, I have used here Object Decision-Associate Multi Item Attribute Task to check if the Item description is empty (you can modify this to use it for your attribute that has picklist values):

When workflow hits Items that have that value empty it will ask them to fill them up and you can even force recheck before going to the next step:

This way you can implement every check that your business needs to be sure that correct datasets are reaching approving members. You can also allow a workflow cancelation option if you want to terminate CR at any of those steps. I did not enable it in my example.

Hi Tomislav,

I tried to set up the object decision but the custom picklist attribute I have, "Inventory Disposition" does not show up in the list of attributes. In fact only one custom attribute is showing up in the list ("DFM cycle count") which is type Integer.

I checked the item attributes and the attribute's "Include in workflow" option is disabled.

Thank you for highlighting this limitation. You are correct, we are not allowing custom attributes that have picklist values to be exposed in CR workflows. I have documented your use case.

The best way you can check if any of the Items in BOM that are in the CR are missing values is to export it to excel, filter by status (development/pending/...), and by that custom-picklist-attribute filed is empty. That way you will get impacted Items that are missing that custom atribute.

Thank you for documenting the use case. In addition to checking for allowing custom attributes with picklist to be exposed in CR workflows, Could you also investigate having custom mandatory release fields or at least having custom fields whose value can be set via a bulk operation similar to how the revision note field operates in a CR workflow? It would speed up the process a lot and be helpful in mitigating the risks of not filling out the information and would also avoid having to cancel CR's for missing information.
