The Splitface tool really needs to be able to select a face by clicking the face. I can't always see the edges of some walls; building steel, column enclosures, floors & roofs can all be in the way. I can click faces to select walls or paint walls but the face based tool can't. That's kinda weird.
Try to check "Select Elements by Face" button. If you see red x on it, that's mean that you can't select elements by face. This is, probably, the reason of your problem. So, just press that button, to allow face selection.
