Space parameter for lighting fixtures in Revit

Space parameter for lighting fixtures in Revit

Let me register the following enhancement request on behalf of a customer:

Add space parameter for lighting fixtures in Revit.

I fully support this request. However, the issue extends beyond Lighting Fixtures and highlights a broader limitation in Revit's handling of Spaces across MEP categories.

Many categories still lack a consistent and usable relationship to the associated Space. As a result, it is difficult to perform room-based analysis, scheduling, and quality control directly within Revit.

For example, Mechanical Equipment can contain parameters representing heat gains, cooling loads, electrical power, and other design data, but these values cannot be automatically aggregated at the Space level. This prevents users from generating reliable room-based summaries of heating, cooling, and electrical demands from the actual equipment placed in the model.

Revit would benefit from a more comprehensive Space framework where MEP elements can:

  • Reliably identify their associated Space.
  • Expose Space information in schedules, tags, filters, and the API.
  • Contribute load-related properties to Space-level calculations and reporting.
  • Support aggregation of electrical, heating, cooling, and other engineering loads at the Space level.

Improving Space integration across all MEP categories would provide significantly greater value than adding support for individual categories one at a time and would greatly enhance BIM-based engineering workflows.
