Section Boxes with crop region properties

Section Boxes with crop region properties

Section boxes are very useful, but they have several characteristics that are both frustrating and time consuming. It's time consuming to switch between zoomed in on a cut away and an overall view, and requires chasing down small arrows. More control would also make it easier to discuss things during a design review meeting and wouldn't require creating or locating special views.

Problems:

  • Section boxes can't be created from scope boxes
  • When a section box is deselected all modifications are removed

Solution 1:

Treat section boxes like crop regions

  • Deselecting section box shows or hides the box, but doesn't change what is viewed.  When the section box is turned on again the box is in the same place.
  • When the section box is selected, provide a "Scope Box" parameter that shows all scope boxes in the project.  "None" should be default, and an "Extents" could be added to be the equivalent of the current effect when unchecking the scope box.

Solution 2:

Change the "Section Box" parameter from a checkbox to a drop down list with "None", "View Extents" and "Custom" as defaults and all scope boxes in the project.  If the section box is selected and manipulated it automatically changes to "Custom".

Yes, I think the ideas are complementary, but different.
