Save in-place sketch profile as profile family

Save in-place sketch profile as profile family

There should be a mode to create in-place profile sketches that can be saved to regular profile families. The origin as well as reference lines/ planes are already there in profile sketches as well as labeled paramters. It would allow to sketch profiles with feedback from the main model. By saving the appropriate sketch profile for any particular family type, Revit should automatically assign the newly created profile family as the used profile.

make a new profile from any sketch anywhere.

Hi @Anonymous, I'm assuming this would work as like a "Save As Profile" button whilst highlighting sketch lines?

I think there would be many ways to implement this, ie. a context menu offering to save the profile inside the project or a separate file, also an extra entry on the ribbon next to the OK and cancel buttons is possible. If this takes on at all I am sure the UI experience people at Autodesk will find the best possible way to market this.

How about something like pick another object's profile?

If the selection had more than one profile you would be offered another choice.

Or this could be like the family editor offering you to close the sketch or to save it, close it and load it into its host element. Or Revit could save all profiles, maybe in families/profiles, as they come along so you could drag them into your edited extrusion, sweep etc. when you need it. If you shift dragged it into your edit, the profile would be made into a new individual copy. The curly brackets used for system generated 3d views springs to mind as an idea how to show these auto-generated profiles.

It's common on a small project to sketch a profile for a one-time use -- only to discover later it will be used in mutliple situations. It's a hassle to convert to using a profile family at this point, so why can't Revit make it easy to 'save sketch as profile'??

I figured out you can create your profile By Sketch and since it doesn't allow you to save it right there as Profile Family; then you can open a new profile family, copy and paste your previously made sketch there and save it.

I agree with you, it would be great if Revit had the option.
